I apologse for retreading old ground, and saying what has been said more eloquently a thousand times...But I just watched the Elephant Man for the first time. It was the most beautiful, moving film I have ever seen. It does not stoop into soppy sentimentality. It is simply sad yet joyful and...well, being Lynch fans i am certain you will all know what i mean.

Thank you for allowing me to share that.

Great film. love black and white film.  the ending was tearful, but the real elephant man was never treated that way. he had a great life.

Hmmm, yes, I'm sure both the play & film scripts painted a pretty abysmal existence, but I'd really avoid calling his experience "great", just given the burden of his physical deformity & inabilty to fit into society. To quote Webb Wilder's song The Olde Elephant Man: "Oh, Lord, could you stand to be the Elephant Man?"  Think the answer, for most of us, would be "no".    People do realize that David Bowie played this character on stage, in the prescribed fashion of no disfiguring makeup or costumery, right?

One of my favorite Lynch films. I saw it when it came out and many times after on Showtime in the coming years. Loved the Black and White, just a gorgeous film! Who knew what was to come but this one was the one that started it for me. Top Shelf all the way!

Maybe a colorized 3D musical version would work for ya!!! Speaking of, check out the comedy The Tall Guy, where Jeff Goldblum is cast in a stage version of this story called ELEPHANT!!!
