Man, I hate to say that something by Lynch disappointed me, but having just watched the Dumbland DVD... sure glad I didn't buy it. It's about 33 minutes & is described as "crude, yet sophisticated". Yes, crude line drawing, but Don Hertzfeldt does that brilliantly & his writing is genius. Dumbland is aptly named. It's like the place in the Sick & Twisted Animation Fest where you'd run for a bathroom break. That said, I did find The Stick kinda funny, but all in all I don't think I'd subject myself to this one again.

Yeah... When you asked if anyone had seen the DVD in that other thread, and got no responses, I wondered if there were even any Dumbland fans out here. Like the Angriest Dog comics, it has its moments (and DL's fingerprints all over it) but is not anything I grab my friend's and say "you have to see this!"

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only person who found this series to be...uh...sucky? Dumbland is good for a few stupid quotes, but that's about it. Didn't really do anything for me. My roommate thinks it's f'ing hysterical though. I just don't understand that, but oh well.

John, I don't doubt that it was time consuming & I respect David for doing it. I love animation & have no problem with "lewd & crude" (though it wasn't THAT lewd, except for the thing about the duck). The main problem I had was with the writing, which was mostly simple & predictable. Vanity projects are great, but the price tag is pretty high for something this short. I just expect more from one of my all time heroes. Can't wait to see his new film!

i remember watching these back when i had my dl.com membership and not loving them. i did show a couple of friends "the stick", which prompted my friend dan to ask if lynch was going through an "autistic period". they were okay, but i've seen online cartoons i liked much more. -cg

I wouldn't want to suggest that incorporating the Maharishi's methods of awakening the inner creativity channels of bubbling bliss or devoting beaucoup time to fundraising for international Peace Palaces peopled with Yogic Flyers have anything to do with the so-called "Autistic Period" ....
...so I won't.

Well I can't speak for everyone else, but for me the name has nothing to do with the quality or the lack of funny. It could be called pretty much anything and I still would find it rather...dunno...bleh. I'm not saying this as a slam to David. There is a great wealth of his work that I enjoy immensely. I just didn't particularly care for this specific project.

How do you like this for you, John? I put Lola in the frame since she likes you so much.

WowBabeWow! I actually LIKE that! Puts me back in Maui, a bit younger, strat's the wrong color - I have a green and a white one, but HEY! Who's complaining? Now where were the instructions on how to add these things?
OK, I think I got it. Sorry about the hour of huge images.
OK, Susan, how do I get a copy of the one you made? Thanks.

I had to actually change my gender to make your avatar, John! Here's the link (which I'm not advanced enough to do as a simple click-on link):

You may have to register with Yahoo but then it's pretty simple. Afraid the geetars only come in blue, however.

I actually rather enjoyed Dumbland, particularly the more atmospheric episodes 6 and 8. I think there's more to the main character than meets the eye.

NECRO POST ALERT!!!
Ok, I've talked some sh*t about Dumbland in the past. I kind of liked it, then was bored with it, then hated it.
Watching it on the big screen with a room full of drunk people, it suddenly becomes funny as hell. Maybe its one of those things that gets funnier with repeated viewings.
If it was used to torture foreign spies, I'm sure that would be effective, too. Has anyone else had a change of heart?

Without alcohol, he points.
I'm glad I own it, but I rarely feel compelled to watch it.
