I finally found Inland Empire on DVD, so my serious digging is about to start. It seems to me that since the title of the "secondary" feature is More Things That Happened, and it's explicitly not just a pile of deleted scenes, that this material counts as canon for discussing the overall events. Official material, same world, etc.

Consensus?

(And sorry if this has already been kicked around on any other IE threads, for the most part I've been purposefully avoiding them...)

It will be a little exclusionary if one uses it in a discussion since some DVD distributors didn't see it fit for inclusion.

Edit: It, not I.

Cursed exclusionists...

But as long as it's referenced in enough detail to make the point reasonably clear, I would still see it as fair game.

I'm surprised there are single-disc versions; I'd have thought Lynch would have been strict about that.

Sure, until the guy whose uncle works for David Lynch gave him a special one of a kind DVD of Even More Things That Happened for his birthday, and he watches it every day and it's really great and no you can't come to his house and watch it shows up.

That's the Marlon Brando of DVD for ya.

Does this mean you've actually seen Inland Empire (as well as More Things That Happened) now Booth? If so I'm curious to know how you liked it. Or are you just making a point about what should be considered canon, and what shouldn't? Personally, I don't really have a problem either way... MTTH doesn't really add much to the overall meaning of the film in my opinion, though it does have some fascinating scenes (as well as some really dull and way too drawn out ones, e.g. the hookers hanging out on the street towards the end of the featurette).

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

I have not seen IE, so I can't really make a judgement as to what should or shouldn't be canon, but with your description it does sound like MTTH is to IE what Wake up, Ron Burgundy is to Anchorman, and what Danny DeVito is to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I was merely feeling sympathetic towards the poor souls who have to make do with an interview and a couple trailers.

I've got the 2-disc Special Edition Region 2 DVD of IE yet the special features consist only of 5 shortish interviews. I have no More Things That Happened. IE is the only Lynch DVD that I have and it's the film I like least with no good bonus features.

I have not been in the mood to see it. It's as simple as that.

At least one of the WAH deleted scenes contradicts the final cut. I'm thinking of Dell raping Lula instead of Pooch, as it was in the book.

But MTTH isn't called "deleted scenes." Therefore, I think they are to be included in analysis. Like the Secret Diary is to Twin Peaks, MTTH doesn't really show much more than what we already know from IE.

Plus, it would be stupid not to use it since IE is, well *fill in the blank*.

i think of it as a sorta *directors* cut. like there is IE, proper, 179 mins long. and then there is also the world of IE along with more things that happened. i do believe the MTTH footage relates heavily to IE, even illuminates some things. but im sure i dont want to start down that road for fear of being thought of as sadistic by some of the folk on here. i will say one thing jamie, watch both IE and MTTH on an HD television. the bigger the better. ive seen many arguements and much confusion just because there are many scenes that are barely lit with even sorce lighting, yet if all were clear and out in the open, i dont think so many people would be scratching their heads. or butting them up against walls.
