And as I have said before, I think too much creative control over his works is actually Lynch's downfall. Most of his best work has been done when he was under some form of content constraint or other guidelines he couldn't control. IE was a disaster, in my opinion, for this very reason.

My thoughts exactly!

The Straight Story is an absolute joy from beginning to end and people will be all over INLAND EMPIRE like a cheap suit the second somebody posts a bite-sized synopsis that makes it accessible to the masses. It happened with Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive.

I ran from the noise and the silence, from the traffic on the streets

Just some of the commercials and shorts. I've even seen "The Cowboy and the Frenchman".

The question is, Where have you gone?

Including his other stuff, I've seen a fair handful of his short films (Six Men, The Alphabet, The Amputee, Premonitions, Darkened Room, Boat and Scissors), so I'm missing everything else.

Studios do know how to make pictures. The Elephant Man is a classic movie something that will live on. I gaurantee you more people will watch that than his other features.

Blue Velvet the first time i saw it was amazing. Lync's testimony to Hollywood and he is criticized rightly for making his films to inaccesible. But he does make amazing movies. When pushed to make something commercial with a tight plot and story he excels. I would like to see him doing another "Straight Movie" someday.

I'v never seen Straight Story nor Inland Empire. I'm saving it for a rainy day when i've finished work and i'm relaxed i'll put my feet up and watch it.

I've seen all his features, but there's still a lot of material I haven't seen (though I don't tend to like his short films nearly as much as his features): Hotel Room, Industrial Symphony No. 1, Most of Dumbland (hated the first episode though), Rabbits, Boat, On the Air, the deleted scenes from Wild At Heart... I think that's about it. I'm sure he's directed some commercials I haven't seen as well... the only one of these I really want to see is Hotel Room, since it's kind of a feature (yes I know part of it is not Lynch directed....) also curious about Industrial Symphony and the Wild At Heart scenes.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

IMO, Industrial Symphony No.1 is a masterpiece!  If you are a big Julee Cruise fan - it's worth it!  Hotel Room I really loved as well, can't wait for it to come out on dvd!  The WAH deleted scenes are really awesome, they're almost a movie unto themself.

I can't wait to watch Industrial Symphony! I received it today in the mail and was very happy when I found out Julee was in it. So that's where that Julee video on YouTube is from.

To be honest with ya, I've never been able to sit through Dune in a single sitting.  IMO, it's the worst Lynch film.  It makes Inland Empire seem like Blue Velvet.

The Straight Story is likely his most underrated film, because sans his usual outrageous sex & violence & no hot young stars, people think it's gonna be a bore. He directed the script after Mary Sweeny let him read it & he fell in love with this unique man. He had full control & director's cut. It is NOT a film he "made for Disney", but rather one he made on his own which Disney was canny enough to distribute. It's the wildest live action movie from them since Return to Oz.   That said, in many ways it's the one film of his (besides FWWM, obviously) that's the closest to Twin Peaks.

I completely agree, well said. I love The Straight Story. For those in teh UK yet to see it, Film Four have got hold of it and have released it on DVD. They also show it quite alot on their Freeview channel.

I'd say it reminds me of TP more than any of his other films, for sure.

I've seen all of Lynch's movies including his shorts and i have to say that if your a fan of Lynch you could see them all. I mean Dune, in my opinion isn't that great and The Elephant man might not feel like a typical Lynch movie but they both show his reach as a director and if you like Lynch you might enjoy them. I know i did.

-I've got good news. That gum you like is going to come back in style.

I find this totally shocking that on a board devoted to Lynch that there are people claiming that his first film "Eraserhead" is anything less than a masterpiece?! :S

"Inland Empire" is probably one of Lynch's least compromised films to date, in fact these two films are the purest Lynch films and the others are by and large works of collobaration.
