That's interesting Rigpa. John Fowles also wrote The Collector, from which Jennifer Lynch's Boxing Helena draws its psychological plot-theme. *** Yes, Cliff was trying to stop the drug dealers-- with a bullet. He didn't pull his badge and have backup waiting in the shadows with cuffs. But then again, it is Deer Meadow. Cable probably would've called him a hero. Highly unlikely he was trafficking drugs. Maybe he just needed some pocket cash and planned on robbing the kids. Maybe even killing Laura, too.
How did the ring get under his trailer, anyway? ***
The theory that Desmond gets murdered based on the ring being related to Laura and Teresa is also problematic. Obviously Teresa doesn't get killed right after she puts the ring on- she has her picture taken. And there'd be no reason for Desmond to put it on-- he knows it was Teresa's. Remember that Mike as the MFAP is strongly implicated with the electricity (Indian whooping sound) as well as the "let's rock." But did Mike kill him? At what point did Mike stop killing with BOB, thus giving birth to the MFAP (his arm)?
Is "let's rock" simply graffiti that has no meaning until the MFAP offers it as a clue to Cooper in his dream, to remember the trailer park? One that, incidentally, goes right over Cooper's head as it could have led him to find out where Desmond went... uh, if the writers planned on there being a Desmond, that is. Cooper also spaces out that he's seen the Log Lady's tattoo before, in the photo of Teresa. Ah, Cooper...
I subscribe to the WIP dream theory, the best thing I've ever read in that magazine. Desmond is Cooper dreaming himself, and the ring AND the let's rock/ambient electricity sound are prescient clues about the outcome of this particular blue rose case. Cooper dreams of the ring, and Laura will also dream of the ring, foretelling Laura putting in on. When Laura puts it on, she is saved / taken to the White Lodge.
Who else is taken to the White Lodge? Briggs. Dream or not, I think the viewer is meant to make a connection with the symbol and equate it with mysterious disappearance. The night Mr. Lanterman, who knew about the opening to the gateway, disappeared (died in a fire?), the symbol appeared on Margaret's neck.

On a side note, it's often mentioned how Bobby never gets caught. James tells Harry and Coop Laura said he killed this guy, but they never investigate. Most people assume a Renault took care of the body. I wonder why they didn't use the Low Town shoot-out scene from the Diary in FWWM? Too long? Or does young Bobby have a body count?
