Yes..I have seen the interview where Lynch brings up this topic 'EOTD'...in fact, within the last few weeks. A BBC thing from the late 90's with an Irish guy. (the one where the Irish guy makes that God awful quote about Lynch at the end!!!)
Anyway it does seem that 'EOTD' means different things to different people...so it is tricky to nail down. From going by what Lynch was saying...I personally think that it has to be thought of in the context of the 'whole'...the whole film seen as being comparable 'artistically' to that of the perfect form of a 'duck'. That there is a 'fulcrum' point within the film which is metaphorically the 'EOTD'...a scene/point/aspect that is perfectly situated within the film, that completes and compliments the whole and is, therefore, 'the' EOTD'. If this scene/point/aspect is misplaced within the whole...the perfection of 'the duck'/'film' is tarnished. Now...when discussing what the 'EOTD' scene/point/aspect of any given Lynch film is...then that is where it all gets interesting....becasue surely in some respect at least, it would depend on how you view the film in terms of it being a 'work of art' as a 'whole'. Not everyone is going to have the same thoughts about the film as a whole and therefore, this can only be based on opinion to some degree...beacause its a film and not a 'duck'. Obviously some of Lynch's films will find people agreeing readily as to the 'EOTD' scene, I would cite 'the scene at Ben's' in BV as probably the 'EOTD' scene that many would accept and agree with, but I can't be sure.
Hell...I'm not even sure if I'm making any sense. I'll have to think about it a little more and then see if I can give what I think may be the 'EOTD' scene in a given Lynch film. Consider FWWM...for me the 'EOTD' scene (off the top of my head) would be where Laura goes to 'Bang,Bang Roadhouse'...and outside she meets the log lady, who touches her forehead and then recites the dialogue about 'when this kind of fire starts...' and she looks at her own reflection in the window...'Questions in a World of Blue' segues in and we have Laura crying etc. for me that's my 'EOTD' scene in FWWM...I'm sure many would disagree though.
