For those who never heard of Lynch's theory on the duck's eye, here's a link (http://everything2.com/e2node/Eye%2520of%2520the%2520Duck )

Anyone want to contribute to this thread sharing their  thoughts on which are the "eye of the duck" scenes in each of Lynch's films? Lynch himself identified the EOTD scene in Blue Velvet when they all go at Ben's and he sings "In dreams"; in Wild at Heart when Sailor and Lula find the car accident in the night... But everyone's viewing brings a different perspective, so it isn't necessary to be influenced by what Lynch says.

I need to think of this for a while, so I will just wait for some of you to start this thing.

In FWWM I would say it is the dinnertable/fingernail scene.

Mulholland Drive just seems full of them though. All the scenes are so beautiful and symbolic.

In FWWM it could be when Donna tags along to the pink room.

Lynch also said in that interview that the EOTD in The Elephant Man was the end, right?

Which doesn't seem to fit BV's and WAH's by analogy, which are little interludes that take you away from the narrative (but you still learn something about the characters.)

Would FWWM's be Laura's dream? I could see the pink room as a fast area because there's so much going on visually.

I say it would be better if we tried to re-establish what 'Eye of the duck' truly means for David, but also for us.

From my perspective, the EOTD scene is not a big scene, but a seemingly less important one where you see or feel something you wouldn't normally care about and if you just look at it you start digging through the layers and you find out it's the true core of the movie. To me in FWWM the EOTD scene is when Laura has flashes of the ring in different places and realizes it's the same, then she looks up at the blue flashlights on her room's ceiling and everybody knows what happens next.

Yes..I have seen the interview where Lynch brings up this topic 'EOTD'...in fact, within the last few weeks. A BBC thing from the late 90's with an Irish guy. (the one where the Irish guy makes that God awful quote about Lynch at the end!!!)

Anyway it does seem that 'EOTD' means different things to different people...so it is tricky to nail down.

From going by what Lynch was saying...I personally think that it has to be thought of in the context of the 'whole'...the whole film seen as being comparable 'artistically' to that of the perfect form of a 'duck'.  That there is a 'fulcrum' point within the film which is metaphorically the 'EOTD'...a scene/point/aspect that is perfectly situated within the film, that completes and compliments the whole and is, therefore, 'the' EOTD'.  If this scene/point/aspect is misplaced within the whole...the perfection of 'the duck'/'film' is tarnished.

Now...when discussing what the 'EOTD' scene/point/aspect of any given Lynch film is...then that is where it all gets interesting....becasue surely in some respect at least, it would depend on how you view the film in terms of it being a 'work of art' as a 'whole'.  Not everyone is going to have the same thoughts about the film as a whole and therefore, this can only be based on opinion to some degree...beacause its a film and not a 'duck'. Obviously some of Lynch's films will find people agreeing readily as to the 'EOTD' scene, I would cite 'the scene at Ben's' in BV as probably the 'EOTD' scene that many would accept and agree with, but I can't be sure.

Hell...I'm not even sure if I'm making any sense.

I'll have to think about it a little more and then see if I can give what I think may be the 'EOTD' scene in a given Lynch film.

Consider FWWM...for me the 'EOTD' scene (off the top of my head) would be where Laura goes to 'Bang,Bang Roadhouse'...and outside she meets the log lady, who touches her forehead and then recites the dialogue about  'when this kind of fire starts...' and she looks at her own reflection in the window...'Questions in a World of Blue' segues in and we have Laura crying etc.

for me that's my 'EOTD' scene in FWWM...I'm sure many would disagree though.
