Watching Blue Velvet again a few days ago, it really struck me how much of a douche Kyle MacLachlan's character is. His ways of charming Sandy - hideously cringeworthy 'Egyptian walk' and his hilarious anecdote "I once knew a boy with the biggest tongue... (yeh, that's it)". Also, the way he 'helps' Isabella Rossellini's character by fucking her and physically abusing her, and his "Why are there people like Frank!?"

I know he's meant to be a flawed amateur hero, but was it intentional to make him so annoying or did Kyle's acting have a hand in it? Does he strike everyone else as this as well? I mean, I kind of enjoyed Frank beating him up, and almost wanted him to catach Jeffrey at the end.

Didn't Kyle base his performance on Lynch?

If so, that means Lynch is a douche.

doesnt frank say to jeffery "youre like me" after they leave pussy heaven and have pulled over? and tho jeffery eventually responds by punching frank, at first he looks like frank had said something too close to home for him. as sandy implies, hes part detective, part pervert. i doubt the pretty secretive lynch would put himself into a character as much as you are insinuating. maybe their backgrounds the same(lynch and kyle did both grow up in the northwest in small towns), but to think jeffery is a version of lynch is misguided, i think.

I'd always had a desire to sneak into a girl's apartment and watch her through the night. I had the idea that while I was doing this I'd see something which I'd later realize was the clue to a mystery.
It's not 100% Lynch but the "I'd like to pay you to act out this fantasy I've always had" angle is there.

i totally agree. i meant it more in response to giospurs first post, which was about jeffery's general character.

Oh, I just assumed you were talking to me since I was the only one mentioning Lynch.

"There behind Vista" is still the biggest bum note in the film. Though I don't think any actor could make it sound good.

He's not a douche it reminds me of being a kid just young and innocent ,goodhearted and charming. As you get older and meet women you realise that there is a diffrent side to life.

There are things about life you don't get taught as a kid you have to discover them for yourself like the pain and joy of sex.

I've never thought about Blue Velvet too much there does not seem much that seems to be analyzed but it is very deep and is a male orientated film much as Mulholland Drive is female orientated and Lost Highway is Male driven.

Innocent straight character meets psycho chick and her psycho husband and becomes something diffrent. Not a douche

Are you suggesting that Kyle changed the script?  I believe he was merely doing what an actor is supposed to: working with the words given & taking direction. Yes, his character is flawed & searching. Not completely sympathetic, but he's mixing with an alien world. Not sure what your definition of "douche" is (it's French for "wash").I know it's trendy slang for "jerk", but other than it sounding like an insult, I don't see it's usefullness. Wish that whoever comes up with these cliches would find a more apropos term (& PLEASE replace "awesome" while you're at it).  And it's the Chicken Walk, NOT Egyptian (see, he's showing her his "cock"). An example of how he's still childlike & goofy in his attempt to show-off. The biggest tongue anecdote is also vaguely sexual... You sound like a closet Frank Booth.

I don't understand this sentence at all, you don't see it is usefulness (note that you also spelled this word wrong)?
What does that mean? It is like some alien gibberish.

Yeah, I really have no idea what you are talking about One Suave. What do you mean cliche? All I'm saying is I think Jeffrey Beaumont acts like a douche/jerk/(insert your own more 'apropos' term). I mean, are you so intellectual that you can't understand what this means - "Jeffrey is a douche". I have no idea whether that sentence was "useful". I just wondered if anyone else was rubbed the wrong way by Kyle's character in BV. I clearly don't deserve to discuss the film though as I didn't know the tongue was a Freudian vaginal reference.

Jeffrey is also a douche in the sense that he gets rid of the dirt (Frank) in Dorothy's apartment, which has pink walls.

The chicken walk was not scripted, OSF. In the BV easter egg, Kyle says that this was something he used to do goofing around on set that made David laugh, so he had him throw it in at the last minute. Like the tongue thing, it just shows the character has off-beat curiosities. There is enough expository dialog in the sidewalk conversation that these two bits are just to lighten the tone.

Surely they were douches because it made Frank all the more evil. That's the idea, innit? The only characters that seem real are the evil ones. They act so bad the nice ones. So bad actings. So bad.

I think Jeffrey is a douche for telling Sandy everything about what he finds except his relationship with Dorothy.

He's is quite naive with Dorothy in bed. It really seems she makes him hit her. She preys on him... He is scared to talk about it, even think about it.

But he does treat Sandy badly. I don't like how he tells her not to take that attitude when she tells him breaking in is crazy and stupid (which it was.)

Perhaps the characters of Dorothy and Sandy represent dopplegangers? They are diametric oppostites in pretty everyway imaginable.  Just a thought.....

OUCH!! Okay, so I misspelled (5 points off for me).  I was merely expressing my distaste for the term (slang/cliche) "douche" (& I know it's not new. We were calling folk "douchebags" way back when I was in high school).  Think Lynch seriously wanted Jeffrey to get his hands/soul dirty. Gotta have something for which he must be forgiven. If Sandy can, the viewer should as well.   Oh, & points off for you for leaving out 2 commas in your note... (I'm not intellectual. Just old, I mean, middle-aged)

Being a grammar/spelling/punctuation Nazi isn't a sign of being old. Just of being a little neurotic.

Like a douche, Jeffrey also squirts fluid throughout the movie. All over Dorothy's apartment and in her, and whenever he says the word "mystery!"
