I'm looking for some help from some of you well studied Lynch nerds out there.  For my film class I plan on doing a project concerning the censorship of David Lynch's work.  I've been scouting the internet and am not coming up with much.  So do any of the Lynch biographies address this subject or his views on the ratings system in the US?  Any suggestions for online resources?  I would appreciate any help that I could get.

i know that in blue velvet, during the first time jeffery hides in dorthy's closet and witnesses frank abusing her, after frank has spent himself and gets off her, the last time he says "dont you fuckin look at me" and hits her, the ratings board made lynch cut away to jefferey in the closet. "one too many" is the quote i remember. like what went before was not an issue, just that last punch. eh, pretty ridiculous but that the mpaa. that was in a book, i want to say "lynch on lynch" but i could be wrong. the opening scene of WAH (the killing and killing and killing of bobby ray) was possibly cut a bit as well. i remember quite an uproar at its first screenings, but i cant cite specific sourses. sorry, its early for me. or is it really late? also when he got the phone call with a G rating for straight story, he said "you gotta tell me that again," as if he'd never hear those words repeated. i think all other censorship(i.e. laura elena harring being digitally shadowed on her request not to become internet fodder) has been self imposted. to me, i think he weirds out rating boards so much that the sex and violence almost get forgotten.

Thanks jfk.  I was wondering which of his biographies I should get.  Lynch on Lynch sounds like a good place to start.  I think that alot of editing that has occurred in his films is due to time constraints.  But I had heard those 2 things about BV and WAH.  It kind of interested me.  Yeah I bet his movies totally weird the mpaa out.

since the dune debacle, lynch has it stipulated in his contract that he has final cut, which includes running time. so i seriously doubt that his films' running times have ever affected editing unless it is for the better of the movie(plus he edits with mary sweeny, his sweetheart for over a decade, and wife of a month). the other lynch book i would highly recommend is 'the complete lynch'. all the rest(weirdsville usa etc) are kinda more "fan" orientated, meaning its pretty superficial stuff. i would also recommend the latest(and longest) book on lynch, 'beautiful dark'. its definitely more of a biography, and has some of that 'fan'ish sort of feel, and yeah sometimes the praise gets a bit fawning, but thats just the lit critic in me complaining. theres a ton of great details in it and well worth the read. lynch on lynch is definitely the place to start, and as of now the best critical piece(unless you want to get into lacanian theory, but thats a whole other can of worms). hope this helps!

SPOILER ALERT!

The shot where Bobby Peru blows his head off was slightly toned down.

Don't know if it counts for censorship....but in mullholland drive when the guy gets shot in the head and his hair burns and freezes in place....his brans were supposed to be seeing flying against the wall and hitting a picture on the wall of a plate of Meat and pasta....then dripping from the picture in a bloody mess.....  (typical lynch awesomeness) and he was told it was too violent and graphic.

I don't see why this was a problem, being so much more violence and blood is used in cinema.

does anyone know if that scene(joe the hitman getting ed's famous black book and bungling it every way he can) was in the the orginal MD made-for-tv pilot? if so, i wouldnt be surprised that the brains on the painting would be considered too violent, but at the same time, the guy shoots three people in less than five minutes. sure its handled in a humorous way, but would that have made it onto the little screen? better question(since the abc dunces found the whole thing too boring, so who knows how much they paid attention), did lynch shoot the scene in the original pilot version, or did he come back and add it when he was shooting the rest of the film? ive tried and respected lynch's wish that the pilot version not be watched, so here i am, asking about it.

Did you just call people dunces for not liking something you haven't seen?

no they were dunces well before vetoing MD. for many reasons, the handling of TP for instance(even if it was different, earlier abc dunces).
