Hi,

DL has found some "Blue Velvet" deleted scenes he thought were lost. They are apparently to be included soon in a new DVD or Blu Ray edition of the film. Great news !

More details here : http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/mb/mb110118david_lynch

This is great news. Even better than the FWWM outtakes. So as DL says, the original cut (he says "scenes") have been found and some will be restored for the DVD. I hope they will be integrated into the film rather than left separate.... but I have a feeling they will be extras as I don't believe DL has even done a re-edit or a director's cut. Anyway...Sign me up!

I bought a multi-region blu-ray player so I'll be ready when blu-ray editions of DL's films start filtering through from the US. It's unlikely the new Lynch supervised edition of Blue Velvet will ever be released in the UK - we'll be compensated for the lack of deleted scenes with a trailer or some postcards probably.

Wowie Bob! Excellent news! How these things are lost yet stored somewhere like Seattle (at Judy's?) is beyond my understanding...

I'm also slightly in love with the idea that this long lost footage just happened to be in Seattle. 'Unearthed in a film company vault in L.A.' would have been strangely tiresome.

Interesting. Several years ago, Matt Levinthal, director of my TP mockumentary short Flappy, was doing some work in Seattle where they located some Blue Velvet footage. I asked him if it were possibly the "lost treasure" & he said likely not. But maybe it was...

I would ask DL, I would ask " Dave, is this the complete latter year surprise find vault discovery happening ?  Or is there a further reveal at some time?  For the remaining works currently without a deleted scenes trove? "

How would DL respond to that ? ' People like mysteries.' fingers aflickin.

Curiously, one of my favorite scenes from INLAND EMPIRE...was not in the film! I'm talking about the watch scene from MORE THINGS THAT HAPPENED...

The rights situation in mainland (Northern) Europe is not always the same as in the UK. The mainland Blue Velvet DVD was identical in content to the region 1 DVD except for the annoying PAL speedup and different menu graphics (I used to own both). The UK had a non-MGM release that featured some exclusive extras (a Dennis Hopper interview if I recall correctly), but was on the whole less desirable.

I'm confident mainland Northern Europe will see a blu-ray release of Blue Velvet practically identical to North America (This does not mean I will be first in line to buy it).

I love David. I sometimes get the feeling that he knows exactly where everything is but he chooses to "find" it when the mood is right. This can be said for the "Blue Velvet" scenes just as it can be for the FWWM ones. He is filled with secrets...

David Lynch: There are many things I think that are out there that we don't know about but sometimes, you know, you get certain feelings.

I remember I had that edition of BV with the Hopper interview and remember thinking the video and sound of the film (BV) was pretty poor.... Rights issues in Europe and UK sometimes differ but by no means all the time.

I don't have a blu-ray player anyway, so what ever happens I must wait. But I'll watch with curiosity.

The FWWM issue is a little different. Everyone knows where the scenes are, it is just a question of cost (on the part of the studio/distributor) and effort (on DL's behalf, as he would be overseeing) of the mixing and image enhancement. That is a question of finances and control, BV was down to no one being able to locate the missing footage.

I would be fascinated to see the original 4 hour cut but I guess we will just get a selected deleted scenes compendium.

I also have never been satisfied with the way Blue Velvet looked on DVD. If the image quality is stellar I might be tempted. I bought a ps3 mainly to watch BBC natural history shows on imported UK blu-rays (and eventually play Gran Turismo 5).

I still wonder how "oblivious" to the BV scenes location Lynch really was and if the FWWM scenes have not been released because of time, finance and control or because he just doesn't truly want them to be released. I can understand David's reasoning if he doesn't.

The UK releases of The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and INLAND EMPIRE were completely different to the US. Different prints, different special features, different artwork...

Wild At Heart, The Gold Box, Eraserhead 2000, The Short Films, Dumbland and Lynch One were eventually issued as per the R1 discs a long time after the US. Twin Peaks season two and the Gold Box were only released last year.

The US also gets vastly superior Criterion DVD and blu-ray releases of Powell and Pressburger, David Lean and early Hitchcock films. The injustice!
