| QUOTE: Maddy's death was more shocking and brutal. Laura's death was shocking and brutal also, but it was a film and you knew she was going to die. Maddy's death was the most shocking thing I'd seen on television when it originally aired. still gives me the creeps. |
I agree.. I remember I thought about so many times. Maddy who was such a nice and loveable girl and then brutally murdered by her own uncle. It was heartbreaking.
Man! Smell those trees. Smell those Douglas firs.

During the Q and A session of the 2011 festival, Sheryl said that David had given her a 3rd character to play after Maddy died, had there been a 3rd season.

| her death is one of the scariest, most brutal things to ever be broadcast. |
Most definitely is. But that's not really Sheryl's acting that does is, is it? As for the original question I don't know... I always have second thoughts. There are times when I really admire Sheryl's performance and it is quite right to say that she owns the role or that she actually became Laura, which is perhaps more than just playing her. However, there are some moments where I could complain about her acting, too. She tended to speak through her teeth if you know what I mean, which I find unnatural and irritating. Especially two scenes come to my mind, one as Laura when she suddenly gets tense with Harold and tells him about BOB (I don't mean the yellow vampyre teeth but the way she speaks...) and second as Maddy when she says AND BRING THE TAPE RECORDER! (sorry, this is NOT a good moment). Mostly, though, she is great... as Laura scared, as Laura broken down, as Laura perverse and corrupt, as Laura sweet... many faces to one person!

Great point! It's almost as if David Lynch was creating a "Sybil" character. It would have been great to have at least that third season.

Maybe she would be yet a 3rd cousin Maura, a split personality between the other 2!!

I thought Sheryl was perfect as Laura. Funny story ... I work for the newspaper in my hometown (a small town between two mountains, ironically!) and this year's Graduation Edition had a girl that looked almost exactly like Laura Palmer. It startled me so much I had to show everyone in the office. Sadly, only one person was a Twin Peaks fan and knew who Laura Palmer was. We shared in the joy while all the others were lost.

| Did you not, by any chance, feel about twenty-five years older on that particular day?

That is archived in the memory banks and rest assured if she commits to another Fest attendance, that will be my question :) | During the Q and A session of the 2011 festival, Sheryl said that David had given her a 3rd character to play after Maddy died, had there been a 3rd season. Love, Laura |

Diane... 10:00 a.m. at the Great Northern. I've just been in a hotel room with the One-armed Man... or what's left of him. In another time, another culture, this man would have been a seer, a shaman priest... possibly a leader. In our world, he's a shoe peddler, and lives in the shadows.

| QUOTE:I loved Sheryl Lee as Laura - still love watching her as Laura. I can't see anyone else doing it. Now here is a question (and I know it's been visited before, but what the heck) - who would make a good Laura nowadays, in a current "re-make" of Twin Peaks?? |
Sheryl wasn't a good Laura, she was a great Laura. TO me, she WAS Laura. The mix of Lynch's writing and direction and her newbie acting style and technique made Laura and Maddie come to life in a way that was never written in the scripts nor spoken of during shooting. Perhaps Lynch's greatest talent is his ability to uncork this lightning from the bottle so effortlessly and consistently and then NOT get in the way of capturing it on film.
A new Laura would have to be just that -- NEW! A strongly talented natural who you and I have never heard of who had the ability to effortlessly draw us in and make it seem private and naughty and then overwealm us with pity and arousal and desired intimacy and then when her junkie fix of passion and closeness temporarily filled in her need and, when each moment of stolen intimacy turned back to driving her pain from her life with her father in his Bob-form, up would come the barriers and she reverted to the wisecracks and the pain-numbing drugs. All played while her character is long dead. She would also have to look good while wrapped in plastic, with blue lips and flecks of riverbank on her face.

I agree with Green Formica Table. Sheryl Lee WAS Laura to me. She was absolutely brillant in her portrayal of Laura Palmer. I thought everything from the moment we see her in the pilot to the end of the series in the black lodge was flawless.
