Apols in advance if this has been covered before or just plain boring

Thought it would be interesting to see how we all rate DL's output, to see if there is a consensus or disagreement.

My top ten:

1 = TP/TP:FWWM

1 = Blue Velvet ( I can never decide as I love them both so much!)

3 = Eraserhead

4 = Lost Highway

5 = Wild At Heart

6 = Industrial Symphony / Floating into the Night

7 = The Elephant Man

8 = Mulholland Drive

9 = Images (book)

10 = Jennifer Lynch ......Only kiddding, taking Lynch's output way to literally  Real answer = The Grandmother.

This list is only a rule of thumb, I changed my mind many times just doing this list, and tomorrow it would different again!

Since you mentioned Jennifer Lynch, what about "Boxing Helena?"  Nobody here ever talks about that movie.  I love it, in a warped sort of way.

Boxing Helena and FWWM are my two favorite movies of all time.  I love them both equally. That being said,

1. FWWM

2. TP

3. Lost Highway

4. Mulholland Drive

5. Blue Velvet

6. Wild at Heart

7. Eraserhead

8. Rabbits (and the experiements on DL.com)

9. Images (especially the Fish and Chicken kits.  His paintings remind me of his song lyrics.)

10. Lynch on Lynch

I would never sacrifice the movies I didn't mention from my collection.  I'm not without my criticisms, but I appreciate his contribution on the whole to the art world and think all of it is noteworthy.

Don't push your luck, buddy!

I'm not getting something here, did I make some TPG forum faux pas?

smokedchezpig, can we have the long story?

Really suprised some of you guys like Boxing Helena so much. I adored the Secret Diary of LP and was uber-excited about Boxing Helena when it came out, but was really disappointed with it, liked the idea and some really memorable scenes but as a whole it just left me cold. However, can't wait for Surveillance.

I have collated the charts posted above and have come up with a TPG top ten for Lynch. This is not super accurate (no spreadsheets involved) but it is pretty close.

1 = Mullholland Drive

2 = Lost highway

3 = Twin Peaks

4 = Blue Velvet

5 = Fire Walk With Me

6 = Eraserhead

7 = Wild At Heart

8 = The Straight Story

9 = The Elephant Man

10 = The Short Films

Mullholland Drive was the clear winner.

LH, TP, BV, FWWM and Eraserhead were bunched quite closely, all scoring highly.

Then there was a big drop off to WAH, The S Story and The Ele Man with all 3 being close.

Finally another big drop to The Short Films and other projects that missed out on the top ten.

Phew, that turned out to be a bit trickier than I thought it was going to be!

A few things I noticed:

- most people completely ignored Dune. it may well be Lynch's worst film but we're writing here about Rabbits, ndustrial Symphonies and Grandmas... and even Boxing Helena... why forget Dune???

- surprisingly many people ignore Straight Story, too, now that's too much for me

- I share crabalocker's disappointment with Boxing Helena. While I wholly appreciate the Secret Diary, and also quite appreciate Sherylin Fenn :-)) .. unfortunately I found Boxing Helena rather average; not bad but nothing special (nice to see it did please someone, though... 12rainbow :-))

crabalocker said:

 1 = TP/TP:FWWM

1 = Blue Velvet ( I can never decide as I love them both so much!)

- as far as I can remember that was also the final result of the old set of "Survival" threads. Those two remained to the end of the game and FWWM was considered "most loved", while Blue Velvet - "most perfect".

- a few people voted very high for Mulholland but low for Lost Highway. curious. I always thought these two films were very much alike. Even more curious because on my list there is also a lot of space between them... Look:

1. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and the Lynch-directed episodes of the series
2. Blue Velvet
3. Lost Highway
4. ... a gap, those three outstand
5. Elephant Man
6. Eraserhead
7. Wild at Heart
8. Straight Story
9. Mulholland Drive
10.Dune

Please count in my votes, too, so that Mulholland can drop a few points ;-)

I think it is difficult enough to put DL's films in order, so it becomes absolutely impossible to arrange different art forms on one list. I did manage to put Twin Peaks in, otherwise this is just my list of the films "in order".

1. Mulholland Drive
2. Lost Highway
3. Twin Peaks
4. Blue Velvet
5. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
6. Wild at Heart
7. Straight Story
8. Eraserhead
9. Elephant Man
10. Dune

Elephant Man is underrated. The last three on my list I absolutely loathe. Definitely among the worst film experiences of my life.
