This week let's talk about Albert... As usual with this kind of 'conventional' characters I don't really have any questions... I don't think there are any mysteries related to Albert, so just tell me what you think about him, about Miguel Ferrer, what he brings to the show, etc. I have, though, some subjects I like to suggest for discussion, such as what is the kind of friendship he and Coop had and Albert's move to the 'light side' (when he hugs Harry and is nicer to everyone). I think Nefud and I talked a long time ago about this and he said he didn't feel he was Albert anymore (the same that when Coop removes his black suit and coat for that shirt); I wonder if anyone else shares this view... I could quote Albert all day, but I like specially his speech in the morgue, you know: morons, half wits, dullards, dunces, dumbbells, etc.

A lot of characters undergo some kind of transformation in Season 2. Bobby becomes great, Leo get's even more braindead, BEn goes crazy, then "good"... I don't think Albert changes as such. I see it more as another side of him he doesn't always express. He was one of my top 10 characters during Season 1. His behaviour in Season 2 got him into my Top 5. I think he's brilliant. I had reason to quote Albert last night. I've been staying at my parents' house over Xmas, and they live in a picturesque little town full of small minded inbreds whose idea of fun is driving in circles in fast cars. This is where I grew up adn I love the mischeif of going out and getting wasted there occasionally, and pissing these quarterwits off. Last night me and brother were threatened by a bunch of these chowderhead yokels, and a preceded to give them The Albert Speech. The "dunces, dulalrds..." one. We escaped, but only just.

I can't say enough about Albert and I could also quote him all day long. Miguel Ferrer is simply awesome as the cynical forensics specialist. I agree with Skybaby that there are characters that undergo more radical changes and Bobby and Ben are perfect examples of this especially Ben. Albert is in my top five characters for the entire run of the series. Not sure, why Albert went to the 'light side' as Gordon put it...but it sure did make for some great Albert moments. some great Albert quotes... "Where do they keep his water dish?" "And it's another great moment in law enforcement history" "What kind of operation they running out of this treehouse, Cooper?" "I think the Sheriff has a serious problem with his girlfreind" and the all time best. "I have traveled thousands of miles and apparently several centuries to this forgotten sinkhole in order to perform a series of tests. I do not ask you to understand these tests, I'm not a cruel man. I just ask you to get the hell out of my way so I can finish my work...Mr. Horne, I understand your position in this fair community pretty much guarantees banality, insincerity and a rather irritating method of expressing yourself. Stupidity however is not a necessarily inherited trait. Therefore, listen closely, you can have a funeral any old time. You dig a hole, you plant a coffin. I, however, cannot perform these tests next year, next week or tomorrow, I must perform them now...drill whirs...I've got a lot of cutting and pasting to do, so why don't you please return to your porch rockers and resume whittling."
"Every day holds a new beginning and every hour holds the promise of an Invitation to Love."

Ah Albert...Albert's snide comments and deadpan expressions...he was just GREAT!!! Like when Andy hits his nose with the board at Leo's, "And it's another great moment in law enforcement history..." I love the little shake of his head that he gives...he wouldn't have even needed to say anything (although I'm sure glad he did!! :)) Love the cutting and pasting scene...that's a classic!!! I also love the first scene between Harry, Albert and Coop...Albert's ranting and raving about slip shots, backwater burgs and cake...Harry's eyes are just widening with contempt..."What are you waiting for, Christmas?!?!?" And then Coop's calm, "Well Albert, I suggest you get started." Albert storms off, "Albert's path is a strange and difficult one." While Harry is still just seething...I also love his expression when Ed is telling Coop how he shot Nadine's eye out. Then he tries not to laugh. There's so many!! Like when Harry *after he and Coop see Bobby at the hospital and Harry says, "He doesn't look sick..."*, Albert says something to the effect of, "Sheriff Truman, seeing this kind of deductive technique...it's just a real treat for me." Some other fave quotes: "...Any relation to the dwarf?", "Practice walking without dragging your knuckles...", "Just find this beast before he takes another bite.", "Get a life, punk!", "As he so sincinctly put it, "I'M WORRIED ABOUT COOP!!" Miguel had him down to a T!!

When Andy hits his nose with the board, Albert's expression is priceless. He doesn't even need to say anything. His face is dripping with distain.

I love this connection between Albert and Andy. It's key to me. Albert, with his cold intelligence, looks with disdain on the seemingly dull-witted Andy. It's Andy, though, as was mentioned in another thread, who makes so many discoveries, whether by accident, intuition, or through focused thought (as with the map). Albert's transformation brings him closer to Andy-ness, more in touch with his emotions, leaving behind his angry behavior that creates emotional distance and safety.

Hello there! It's been a while since I last posted anything, maybe even a year. Gordon just might remember me, though. Anyway, I've been reading the forum every now and then, and perhaps this new edition of the forum can also witness my comeback ;) I think Skybaby had a big point there, what comes to characters' transformations on season 2. At least all of those already mentioned - Albert, Coop, Ben, and Bobby. But then again, Skybaby also notes that the light side could be only an other side of him, one that he seldom expresses. However, all these transitions happen after the beginning of season 2, ironically enough at the same time that Dave had to loosen his grab on the series because of Wild at Heart etc. With other rather dramatic character development considered, is it really something that has been in Albert from day one? On the other hand, Lynch is nowadays the icon of the Transcendential Meditation related stuff, and that, for example, may be something to hint that it might've been his early idea as well. I believe this is a subtopic worth further discussion.

I completely agree with Skybaby, Albert doesn't change...he's always like that, friend of his friends, always wearing a smile....but also a smartass son of a b*tch... It's like "Lost"'s Sawyer, I don't think he becomes good, but he's always like that, with those two sides (in Sawyer's case nice guy with dark past, awful secrets and sarcastic behavior). Coop describes Albert perfectly even before he first appears: cream of the crop, but lacking some of the social niceties... Nobody's perfect, as Harry replied...

I think that if Albert was just a nasty sarcastic badass, Cooper wouldn't have been his freind in the first place.

Albert doesn't fuck around. "I don't suffer fools gladly, and fools with badges- never." Coop knows he gets the job done. (Was Sam Stanley supposed to have been Cooper's partner at one point?) I find that people who don't like Twin Peaks and think its all silliness like Albert. However, Albert's logic validates Cooper's dream intuiton. Albert witnessed the return of Philip Jeffries and saw Dale's prediction of the next victim come true. After BOB left Leland, he completely entrusted the case to Dale's methods. Their working relationship is very harmonius. He looks to the great, peace minded thinkers (Gandhi, King) as role models- not such a big revelation, being a peace enforcer himself. A great character with arguably the best introduction in the series, giving it to Lucy and all. Cheers to Miguel for doing such a great job with it.

I think most of my opinions have been filled in already.
One quote I like very much though: "And then he played Zeus at the powerstation"

Thank you Gordon. As it wasn't possible to have ones own avatar I had to make do with whatever I could get.
But now I will change it.

The spanish dubbing ruined that line, it was translated as "Investigate it" or something similar... Dubbing is evil....

I just noticed I dropped an f- bomb in my last post without getting censored. (Someone tell me it's the first one on the new board, I would be so proud.)
