I have only read one of his books - I hesitate to call it a novel because it is semi-autobiographical - My Dark Places. It's probably not the best example of his work, and I don't think I really enjoyed it! I would like to read The Black Dahlia, esp. before they release the film version.

YOU'RE RIGHT, PROBABLY NOT THE BEST ELLROY'S BOOK TO BEGIN BUT IT'S SURE MY FAVORITE TRY WITH L.A. NOVELS (BLACK DHALIA, WOLVERINE BLUES, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, WHITE JAZZ) OR AMERICAN TABLOID.

I have read two of his books. American Tabloid. The Cold Six Thousand. Both were good. Very good. Very enjoyable. His writing is odd. No sentence was over nine words long. Some were just one word. I did not think I would like it. But I got used to it. Quickly. It made you read the text faster. That was his intention. I think. Or perhaps there was no comma on his keyboard. I think he has affected me. DMG
