Dario Argento has FINALLY gotten a big budget film scheduled, and it is his 3rd installement in the 3 Mother's trilogy. The first was SUSPIRIA and the second was INFERNO!
This is something I am very excited about. I hope with it being big budget, it will come to theaters here in the states! For those of you who are unfamiliar, SUSPIRIA and INFERNO are considered to be the best examples of EXPRESSIONISM in horror. It is a style that isn't for everyone, as I am sure there will be posts declaring SUSPIRIA to be boring....but that just means that the viewer finds expressionistic based films to be boring. I happen to love them.....they thrive soley on the use of creative color, lighting, music, gore, and atmosphere. There is hardly any real plot....only events. They are Italian horror classics, and although a trilogy was written, only the first 2 chapters were filmed. Most had felt ARGENTO would never finish. This is historic!

I also hope that with it being big-budget, it also doesn't suck ass. I'm personally looking forward to this. I'm not sure what to expect, considering that Argento hasn't exactly been putting out good stuff in the more recent years...but I think returning to the Three Mothers to finally bring it all home might spark some of that classic Argento we know and love.

Here, here Amanda!
I totally agree with you. I still LIKE his recent stuff....but it certainly isn't impressive like his later material. I just wish he would get Jessica Harper back to play Suzie Banyon. That would be great to see an appearance from her in the movie!

Amanda said it best. I also agree that returning to this storyline and doing the final part of this trilogy will reignite the creative spark in Argento that we fans of the first two films enjoy most in his work. I'll have to check out Inferno again, I only saw it one time many, moons ago. Suspiria, well, I lost count. I am very much looking forward to this film and am also hoping the big budget doesn't determintally affect Argento's vision.

I'm hopelessly addicted to Suspiria. I can't tell if it's the cinematography or the music that has me all enraptured every time, but if it's on TV I will stop and watch it no matter what is going on in my day/night. Inferno I've only seen a few times unfortunately, but I did most recently see it in the 2005 Halloween season when IFC did a nice little chunk of Italian horror throughout the month (mmmmm...Bava and Argento...mmmmm). Whether this film is terrible or magnificent, I will still see it. Maybe we'll be lucky and he'll throw Asia in there for good measure? I'd switch teams for her in a heartbeat.

I can't wait! Oh yeah, it would be excellent if Jessica Harper was in it. Suspiria is a masterpiece and Inferno is brilliant (gotta love that underwater scene), here's hoping this will be a great final chapter. Argento hasn't really made a great film since Opera. Sleepless was good and Trauma had Piper Laurie, but The Card Player was pretty bad. Haven't seen Jennifer, anyone here seen it?

MAX VON SYDOW has been set to star in this!!!!! THIS IS AWESOME! The title so far is THE MOTHER OF TEARS. In Suspiria and Inferno, it is explained there are 3 witches that are ministers of satan. 2 of the witches have been covered.
This movie is covers the final mother of the three sisters.
Torn Cinema did an excellent write up on Darkdreams as follows: "the film's plot will be a tale of witches and suicide in modern Rome. The trilogy is based on a book written by the alchemist Varelli [well, not really] according to which the Three Mothers - Mater Suspirorum, Mater Tenebrarum and Mater Lacrimarum - each inhabit one of three cursed houses in three different cities: Freiburg, New York and the Italian capital. The Mother of Tears will take up from where Inferno left off, with one of the witches who survived the destruction of the New York house watching an inspector in charge of investigating a series of mysterious murders at a university. Written by the director, with Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, and produced by Medusa with American co-funding, the film will star Ennio Fantastichini in the role of the detective, Chiara Caselli as a psychiatrist, Max Von Sydow as a university professor with a mysterious past, and the young Giordano Petri as the investigator who takes charge of the inquiry when Fantastichini's character is killed."
This is great news! These stories are based on tales by The Alchemist Varelli, and Dario's ex-wife and star of Deep Red, Daria Nicolodi. Nicolodi will also be in the film, as she was told these old tales by her grandmother. THis is going to be the BOMB! The visual aspects used in SUSPIRIA and INFERNO were mindblowing. The lighting alone made the film. Now, if only they can get GOBLIN to do the music!!!!!!

I'm very excited about the introduction to this film and the others. Never seen any of Argento's work but these descriptions are intriguing. And anything shot in Rome will automatically be of interest to me. Thanks for sparking my curiosity! Susan

Oh yeah, Susan, you gotta check out Suspiria (and I'll check out Inferno again), never has gore looked so beautiful.

Yeah Susan, I could give you a great horror movie list, but I wouldn't know where to start until I get my old computer working. I have a top 100! It is saved on my old hard drive.

Is this still happening? Will Asia be in it? I heard she was directing. Ever see The Stendhal Syndrome?
