I never pay attention although I heard a great interview with a book cover designer from Knopf. The interviewer said that Knopf is known for their fine designs -- they did the latest Tom Wolfe book.
It also seems to me that I've liked Athenaeum, though that may have been children's books or art books. Can't remember. Like wine by the labels, I judge books which book to pick up or peruse FIRST by its cover unless it was one I was otherwise seeking out. Susan

If I am not msitaken Anne Rice, Anne Tyler and another, who the hell is it, well, it'll come to me, are with Knopf also. I submitted my first novel to them way back in '94 because they actually accepted unsolicited manuscripts, not sure if they still do.

Smokey, remind me to tell you about Macmillan's New Writers scheme next time we chat. Looking at my bookshelves, I notice that I have a lot of books published by Virago. They usually have nicely designed covers too. I also like Vintage... which I think is owned by Random House (what isn't?!) I like Faber & Faber's books but I have noticed that from a design perspective their paper quality is often poor and their covers often have very sharp edges. When you've paid six or seven quid for a paperback, quibbles like that are justified.

Atria (a division of Simon & Schuster) last year released a gorgeous ‘coffee table’ book on Audrey Hepburn. The packaging on this title is some of the finest to come from a non-boutique publisher.
