So what kind of stories would today's NY Times be publishing if today's NY Times was around in 1775, you might be asking yourself (or not asking yourself).

How about this?

GAH. That reads like a cover of The National Enquirer.

All you need is a picture of Martha Washington in an unflattering bathing suit photo at the beach, and it's like they're one and the same.

The question behind that Enquiresque frontpage is:

Do a certain group of Democrats in the federal bureaucracy ( either currently or recently serving) collude with a faction of Democrats in the press to undermine American foreign policy, hoping thereby to benefit their party? It's one of the most important stories of the last four years, and so far, at least, there isn't a single Democrat of national stature who has spoken out against this unholy alliance. Although John Murtha and other top Dems did try to get the Times to kill the banking story.

Whaddaya think??

Jeff Goldstein of Protein Wisdom thinks :

"And the New York Times wants you to know that Bush’s real agenda has never been to fight terror (or rather, such is a convenient cover)—but has rather been to expand executive branch power.  Me, I’d frame Bush’s actions as a desire to take back executive powers usurped by the other branches—and point out that 1) we haven’t been attacked since 911, thanks in large part to the speed with which the executive is able to move, and 2) that this supposed power grab will be available, too, to Democratic Presidents—but that would just confuse matters.

Better just to pretend that the absense of successful attacks on the homeland since 911 has to do with the willingness of papers like the Times to leak national security secrets. Because had they not, the terrorists would have already won.  Whereas now, we get to wait until their able to benefit from the leaked secrets."            Note : "their" s/b " they're".

It really is too bad the NYT ruined the War on Terrorism by telling the terrorists that their communications and bank transactions might be monitored. Maybe someone should send around a petition to have the editor executed for treason.

[I was determined that I wasn't going to get into the political discussions again.  I lasted about three days.]

I have some suggestions on how the NYT could improve their readership, thus not needing to do the following:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Times Co. (NYT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) plans to narrow the size of its flagship newspaper and close a printing plant, resulting in the loss of 250 jobs, the company said in a story posted on its Web site late on Monday.

The changes, set to take place in April 2008, include the closure of a printing plant in Edison, New Jersey. The company will sublet the plant and consolidate its regional printing facilities at a plant in Queens, the paper said.

The newspaper will be narrower by 1 1/2 inches. The redesign will result in the loss of 250 production jobs, the company said.

The New York Times said it expected the changes to result in savings of $42 million.

The narrower format, offset by some additional pages, will reduce the space the paper has for news by 5 percent, Executive Editor Bill Keller said in the article.

The Times will join a list of several other papers from The Washington Post to the Los Angeles Times that have reduced their size as they cut newsprint and other production costs and try to stem a loss of readers and advertising to the Internet and other media.

Separately, Chief Financial Officer Leonard Forman will retire in 2007 after the company names a successor, another article posted on the Times Web site said.

Forman was president of The New York Times Co. Magazine Group from 1998 until it was sold in 2001, the biography on the company's Web site says. He was senior vice president for corporate development, new ventures and electronic businesses from 1996 to 1998.

He also worked for the Times Co. as director of corporate planning and chief economist from 1974 to 1986.

Jordan, when I heard about this new plan, I immediately added the full week to my Sunday NYT subscription!  I'm so excited about a narrower format!

Now, if only the Wall Street Journal would do the same.  It's the widest paper out there, I think.  More than anything else, the width of a paper is what makes or breaks my decision to read it.

You know what I'll miss that I think ONLY the NYT does?  Every 6 weeks on Sunday they have a diagramless crossword puzzle.

Can't find those anywhere else including the NYT Crossword puzzle books.

BTW, I've been meaning to reply to the following: "It really is too bad the NYT ruined the War on Terrorism by telling the terrorists that their communications and bank transactions might be monitored. Maybe someone should send around a petition to have the editor executed for treason."

Just to correct the record - NYT published a CLASSIFIED (TOP SECRET) program. Of course terrorists know their financial transactions are being watched but that's not the point. This is a TOP SECRET (however secret it is) project, and as a result, the NYT publishing such things hurts the US (and all US allies). And since we all know this isn't the first time NYT has done such a thing, but is instead, an ongoing problem. The editor shouldn't he hanged for treason, but the person or persons who are leaking such a thing, if intentional, deserve to be brought up on charges and have the book thrown at them.

Here's a NYT front page from 1943 along the same lines. If the NYT editors of today were running the paper.

Here's one from yesterday's LA Times.

c

This is almost the straw that breaks this camel's back where I finally, after 36 years of daily subscription, put the skids to my daily LAT delivery. Say what you will, Jamie, with the amoozing Kofi with the crown etal in the above link, there is a point of critical mass where some of these news outlets have gone off the deep end in their indiscrimate praise and "benefit of a doubt" coverage of the likes of Hezbollah, incarcerated terrorist suspects and Iranian proxies. My sole request would be that they treat the US, Republicans and the Bush administration with equal regard once in a while.

Check it out. This cartoon could just as easily have come from the archives of Radio Islam. Compare and contrast. Okay, okay, had Radio Islam (or Ahmadinejad in his post Holocaust Cartoon Exhibition chose to put on a more contemporary defiling of the Zionist Entity, say) there would be a more pronounced nose and a more stereotypical Elder Zionist set of features. The substance, however, is consistent.

b Sooner rather than later it might be a good idea to be a "decider" and decide which side is closer to your way of thinking. These are not times for ambivalence in my opinion.

Dell actually has diagramless crosswords. I've only ever found them in books with either just crosswords or the variety puzzle books, though. I don't recall ever seeing a complete book of just Diagramless puzzles. :(
