Okay... Which Johnny Cash song would you consider as the best he ever made?

"Hurt" Yeah, it's not a proper J R Cash song, I know. But it's still one of the greatest tracks ever recorded. His covers of "One" and "If You Could Read My Mind" are pretty damn fine too. For one of his own songs, you can't beat "I Walk The Line" DMG
I hope they cannot see / The limitless potential / Building inside of me / To murder everything / I hope they cannot see / I am the great destroyer

I was going to say Hurt too, and also his cover of Personal Jesus.
My theory by A. Elk, brackets, Miss, brackets. This theory goes as follows and begins now. All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end. That is my theory, it is mine, and it belongs to me, and I own it, and what it is, too. Ange's Odyssey

Well, I have trouble chosing my favourite... I love the well-known songs as "Ring Of Fire" and "Walk The Line"... I started listening to them many years ago... I also like the song "When A Man Comes Around"... and definitely also "Man In Black"... Hmm...

I agree Kiddo, "Ring of Fire" is my personal favorite. I love that mariachi sound with the trumpets and all.

I've always been partial to "A Boy Named Sue" myself. There's very little he's done though that I don't like ("Ring of Fire" for instance...overplayed crap if you ask me. No offense to those who love it. When you live in a farmtown like I do, you hear more Cash than you ever expected in your whole life, and "Ring of Fire" is RIGHT AT THE TOP of everyone's playlist). Cash always had this universal appeal in his music that was undeniable. But I think the one song that impressed me the most was his interpretation of "Hurt." What used to be an angry, self-loathing anthem from NIN became a sad lament as it trickled from Cash's lips. Where the song once made me want to spit in the faces of ex-boyfriends and set fire to my collection of pastel turtlenecks, it suddenly had me sitting down and reflecting on my life. It actually made me cry the first time I heard it. So. Yeah. :) And slightly OT, but Apogee, I LOVE your avatar. :D That movie helped shape my childhood. :P

Thanks Amanda! I was waiting to see if anyone would recognize it. I recently started looking around for it on DVD, only to find out that it hasn't even been released. So instead of giving in to bootleggers I just ended up downloading it. It's funny though, there seems to be a "Monster Squad" revival thing going on. There has been a couple of screenings with Frank Dekker and some of the original cast members. http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=23100 Sorry for the Offtopic. :)

WOW. *LOL* I had no idea. That just rocks my boat in so many ways. Req has a Monster Squad avatar on his Yahoo account. Every time I see it, I start drooling. But the only thing I have is an old tattered VHS copy. I too refuse to kick down for the cruddy Asian bootlegs...maybe we'll get lucky and it will be FINALLY released on DVD? Oh we can only hope...*sigh* On a slightly related note, I was really bummed a few years back to find out that Fat Kid is dead. Dude. Dude. It's Fat Kid! I would have to say "Folsom Prison" as well..."A Satisfied Mind" has always been a favorite and was so pleased when Quentin Tarantino used it in Kill Bill Vol. 2...

In July I purchased Cash's American V (last CD he did, and released this year) and a 2-disc set called "Personal File" (this one you have to really be a big Cash fan I think to really enjoy it). I have to agree with Amanda regarding the overused songs. Ring of Fire is great and all but it's been overplayed so I can't really put it high up on my list. But I played American V quite a lot after getting it. It's not one of those CDs that can be playedi n the background and really appreciated. His voice isn't at its best (obviouisly) but it's very obvious that he was mourning his wife's passing when doing this CD. There's a couple of songs that I really enjoy - God's Gonna Cut You Down (an old Spiritual), Like the 309 (his very last song he wrote), and The Evening Train (which will bring a tear to most people's eyes on each listening). He does an interesting version of "If you Could Read My Mind" on the CD.
I don't have a No 1 song - impossible with Cash methinks.

At the moment I'm really digging "Cocaine Blues". Really bitting, gritty, fun song with an excellent rhythm. Makes me want to go out an slaughter some cheating ho's. Got to appreciate that. American IV is one of my favourite records, the first vinyl album I ever bought. Standouts on that one are... well, you know what, it's silly to list. There are only a few that I wouldn't count as some of my all time favourite noises. For the love of fuck buy this album if you don't own it.

Later. It's more of an album track, was a B-side, one that's not a stylistic stretch for John (though his version is a LOT faster)...

Johnny Cash is a great one! I love lots of his songs. Hurt gives me so much emotionally, and I think it's better than the original... just the same thing for Personal jesus. His original ones, for me the best are Folsom Prison, Get Rhythm, Walk the Line and Ring of Fire. I'm curious to know which of you did like the movie with Joaquin Phoenix and who not. Well, interested in what you think.
