Defamer.com championed this film way back when it was still a concept but here's what they have to say today:

27 April 2006

Monday Morning Box Office: Snakes On A Bomb

There's no point in sugar-coating it, so we'll just come out and say it: The box office numbers don't love you anymore.

1./2. Snakes on a Plane--$13.85 million/$15.250 million (incl. Thursday night screenings)*
1./2. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby--$14.1 million

Late last night, our cellphone rang, and we listened somberly as the weary, disappointed pre-recorded voice of Samuel L. Jackson arrived to deliver another promotional greeting: "Hello, BLOGGER. Pardon me if my memory is bad, but didn't I remind you last week to put down the BLOGGING MACHINE, step away from your BLOG, and make some time to go see my new movie, Snakes on a Plane? Where the f**k were you? Do you have any idea how motherf**king silly it feels sitting in this recording booth, reading from a list of hundreds of names and occupations just so you can feel like this message was meant just for you? And then you don't even go see my new movie, Snakes on a Plane? Fifteen motherf**king million? F**k you, motherf**kers. I'm done with you. See you in motherf**king hell."
PS. I'm not sure this is true, but hey, I'll pass it along all the same.

PPS.  Oh this is so wrong .  Especially the obtuse River Phoenix reference.  But I do like that hot pink shoe!

Worst opening in a l-o-n-g time.  Maybe there is a place for 'old media' advertising after all.

Boo hoo, the movie is a joke, and like Chuck Norris facts it stopped being funny a while back.
If the studio had released it in the spring it might have performed better. They probably has a cult hit on their hands now, though.

Am I the only one fed up with Samuel L. Jackson? He's still coasting on the character he played in Pulp Fiction.
"Lightsaber, motherf*cker, do you speak it?"
"I'm gonna make a wallet out of these motherf*cking snakes and put the words "Bad Motherf*cker" on it."

I thought the film was quite fantastic for what it was, i.e. a throwback to the old genre films, and it's GREAT fun to see with a crowd of people! :)

Correct waldo me and my friends all went to watch it last night just for the hell of it. T'was a good way to round off the weekend.  I knew it was a goof and wasn't expecting anything more credible than 'scary movie' or some shit like that, so I was surprised when it got the balance right and actually held my attention whilst simultaneously making me wet my pants.

#1: I think the voice message thing was a JOKE, & #2: It's Hollywood, you generally play variations on the same character. Yet the FBI Agent he plays in SOAP is a far cry from Jules. But you probably haven't actually seen the movie. And #3: SO WHAT if opening weekend was weak? Whatever happened to sleeper hits? It's a shame when everything is judged on a $ figure. #4: I enjoyed the film immensely myself. So there. Yes, it's "pulp". No, it's NOT Tarantino.  So...?

I don't expect anyone who paid money to see a movie called Snakes on a Plane to say anything else.

Am I wrong in detecting a little bit of hostility in your post?

my friend hated it, but he did have a good time during the pre-show. but he does have a point...all the people who crap on the movie haven't gone to see it. i would have recommended opening night to anyone from my nerdy coworkers to my parents. it was more than a movie, it was an experience. and you can always just watch the people around you react.

Chris, is your email address still the one that starts with a "b"?

If so, check your inbox and you may have a message from Samuel L Jackson who doesn't take kindly to his messages being considered "jokes" I'll have you know!

If that's not your email address, PM me your new one so I can pass it along to SLJ.

Saw this on Drudge -- the sequel should be "Snakes in a Theater"

http://www.local6.com/news/9717727/detail.html

Two live diamondback rattlesnakes were released in an Arizona movie theater during a showing of the new film "Snakes on a Plane," according to Local 6 News.

Authorities said pranksters released the young venomous rattlesnakes in a dark theater at the AMC Desert Ridge near Tatum and Loop 101 in Phoenix.

The two snakes caused a panic in the dark theater, according to the report.

"That to me is very scary," herpetological association representative Tom Whiting said. "I would hate to be watching a movie about snakes and have a rattlesnake bite me."

Wranglers were called to collect the snakes, the report said.

No one was injured in the incident and, so far, the culprits have not been caught.

Officials believe the snakes were smuggled into the theater in backpacks.

"This thing is under someone's chair and they go to sit and they just push your foot in the air and startle it -- obviously all they got to do is startle this thing," Phoenix Herpetological Society spokesman Daniel Marchand said. "It's dark. They can't see you, you know that well. If it's scared, boom it strikes."

The snakes were released into the desert.

Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

Man, if everyone who pays to see the movie enjoys it, that's a DAMN good average. And there's no more hostilty in my post than there was in yours. You can present your opinion, but it's weak if it's uninformed (just like movie protesters who haven't viewed said film). And if movies were judged solely on box office returns, Lynch would've been out of business a looong time ago.  I'm waiting for the airline-friendly version: Snacks on a Plane.

And I'm waiting for a re-release of the smash hit: Ray Liotta on a plane.

I don't care about the box office, I don't understand how anyone not affiliated with a movie would.

Just to clarify my stance, when I called the movie a joke, I didn't mean the 105 minutes of non stop rollercoaster action bonanza funtime extravaganza. I know that it is directed by the guy who made Cellular, which wasn't bad at all, for an action movie, so he probably did a decent job with it.

The post I quoted was about "Samuel L. Jackson's" outrage that the movie didn't make more than 15 millions, since it had been the talk of the blogosphere (ugh) for so long. And it may be because it has been laughed at, not with. And not everyone falls into the "I must see this movie, it's so bad it's good" category.

I've seen enough movies to know that this is not a movie I'd pay money to see, and Rocky Horror antics just don't amuse me.

So it ain't your cup of venom. And I didn't find it a "bad" (campy) movie. And there was no Rocky antics going on when I saw it.  It was a fun action/horror film.  And it will run for awhile.

If only they'd cast Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom!

I'm not sure what the financial outcome of this film would have been if there had been no internet buzz. I don't know what to make of Snakes on a Plane's grosse profit earnings. All I know is I had a blast the night I saw it. I had fun. That's more than I can say for Superman, X-Men 3, or Pirates of the Carribean 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Even if it was a bomb, that does little to deminish my appriciation for Snakes on a Plane.

anyhoo...
