Yes, he died.  Remember we learned at last year's Academy Awards show that he had had a heart transplant?  Well, it gave out apparently.

I sure loved Nashville.  And Short Cuts.  And Three Women.  Oh, and the Player!  Loved that.

McCabe and Mrs Miller drove me nuts.  The sound thing with all the voices overlapping.

Didn't like that one in the British mansion -- what was it called???  The murder mystery that went on way too long with way too little drama.  Gosford Park!

Well, I didn't like Altman.  But I loved some of his films.  I'm sure he had some very wonderful aspects to his persona though.  He really liked actors unlike Alfred Hitchcock or even Stanley Kubrick, if that can be viewed as a plus.

He's the only one that was able to make Shelley Duvall look even moderately attractive (Popeye excluded).
I dig Brewster McCloud, it's a lot of fun. Not straightforward fun, but still.

I liked MASH; and Gosford Park; and Pret-a-Porter.  Apart from that, not seen a lot of his work.  Shame that his ticker gave out though.

Here's a quiz on how well you know Robert Altman.

Here's my score... 9 out of 10.

How well do you know Robert Altman?

You scored 9 out of a possible 10
Popeyed. Frankly, this is a little uncanny. Surely no one has such insider knowledge of Bob's wild life and times. We can only assume you've spent the past few decades hiding out in Altman's beard.

No, I haven't been hiding out in his beard.  And I never saw Popeye either!

It's impossible to get a full score by knowing Altman, because the last question is wrong.
The real right answer is the first alternative, the one they have as the right one is a Fellini quote.

 Quiz

How well do you know Robert Altman?

You scored 4 out of a possible 10
Mashed. You've seen the TV spin-off, but not the Altman original, and have heard of South Park, not Gosford Park. All of which makes you an Altman ignoramus.

I've only seen two Altman films...Gosford Park and Popeye.  Guess I picked the wrong flicks.

I'm grieving. He was one of my favorite american film-makers and I've seen many of his films. I think he changed a lot in the independent industry and he had this great and incomparable ability to tell a multitude of simultaneous situations, handling a lot of characters and criticizing society.

I think he should be remembered for his Short Cuts, Player, Nashville, 3 Women, A Wedding, Kansas City, Cookie's Fortune, Gosford Park, The Company and also the last one, A Prairie Home Companion.

Thank you for mentioning, Cookie's Fortune, love that movie. So, that one M*A*S*H and The Player are probably my 3 favorities. I liked Short Cuts pretty well, never got around to seeing Pret-a-Porter. If it wasn't for Helen Mirren and Emily Watson, I would have turned off Gosford Park halfway (this was the film that was nominated for Best Picture over Mulholland Drive). I loved his speech when he won the lifetime achivement Oscar. Rest in peace, Robert

p.s. I got 6 out of 10 on the quiz.

Long ago, this Academy Award nominated screenwriter, Roger L Simon, was known to me as "Comandante." He and I were two regulars on the Court TV OJ Simpson Trial post board back in the Early Days of the Web. We privately emailed one another for a short time since we both had local lore and knowledge of the case we didn't share with the popular website.

Later I found him with his own blog. It is amazing to me how often our thoughts have paralleled one another over the years. Two fellow former lefties who gradually turned a corner.

Here's what he wrote about Altman's death shortly after I wrote my post here on the Gazette. Once again, we're in agreement though I have recently rewatched Nashville and loved it just the same.

Robert Altman dies

There was a period of time when I thought Robert Altman was a great director- capital 'g' - mostly shortly after the appearance of "MASH". I remember liking "Nashville" quite a lot too, though I have not seen it recently. I wasn't as entranced with "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," although I know many were.

Then I became less interested in Altman. His semi-plotless improvisations seemed more of a schtick. Even when he came back to 'story' with "Gosford Park," he didn't appear to have is heart in it. He was one of those 'auteurs' who was in love with the sin-nay-mah, saying all the right anti-Establishment things while milking the Establishment for all it was worth. Still, actors loved him (he let them improvise - why not?) and his work has many fine and amusing scenes. It's just that the whole is vastly less than the parts. [Aren't you only supposed to say nice things about the dead?-ed. I'm sure he was a terrific guy. And I said I liked "MASH" and "Nashville."]

Was looking forward to his take on Hands on A Hardbody. Wonder if someone will take up the mantle (perhaps Linklater, being a Texan?)...

Lindsay Lohan released a statement Tuesday extending her condolences to Robert Altman's family:

"I would like to send my condolences out to Catherine Altman, Robert Altmans wife, as well as all of his immediate family, close friends, co-workers, and all of his inner circle.

"I feel as if I've just had the wind knocked out of me and my heart aches.

"If not only my heart but the heart of Mr. Altman's wife and family and many fellow actors/artists that admire him for his work and love him for making people laugh whenever and however he could..

"Robert altman made dreams possible for many independent aspiring filmmakers, as well as creating roles for countless actors.

"I am lucky enough to of been able to work with Robert Altman amongst the other greats on a film that I can genuinely say created a turning point in my career.

"I learned so much from Altman and he was the closest thing to my father and grandfather that I really do believe I've had in several years.

"The point is, he made a difference.

"He left us with a legend that all of us have the ability to do.

"So every day when you wake up.

"Look in the mirror and thank god for every second you have and cherish all moments.

"The fighting, the anger, the drama is tedious.

"Please just take each moment day by day and consider yourself lucky to breathe and feel at all and smile. Be thankful.

"Life comes once, doesn't 'keep coming back' and we all take such advantage of what we have.

"When we shouldn't..... '

"Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of yourselves' (12st book) -everytime there's a triumph in the world a million souls hafta be trampled on.-altman Its true. But treasure each triumph as they come.

"If I can do anything for those who are in a very hard time right now, as I'm one of them with hearing this news, please take advantage of the fact that I'm just a phone call away.

God Bless, peace and love always.

Thank You,

"BE ADEQUITE"

Now things are really steaming up with the Be Adequite quote, which by the way, I don't get.  Does anyone???  Is it like Kid Rock's "I guess we're all in agreeance" comment from the MTV Awards a few years back?

Anyway, turns out Lindsay's publicist if peeved.  From the fabulous Defamer!

Susan

Lohan's Publicist Cross With Media For Being Baffled By Her Client's Blackberried Altman Eulogy

lohan-angry.jpg Leslie Sloane Zelnick, crisis-managing protector of some of Hollywood's hottest, most profoundly troubled and image-impaired stars, has cordially invited those media outlets who uncharitably mocked client Lindsay Lohan's epically impenetrable, rambling, hastily Blackberried (we guessed Sidekick, which is close enough for our purposes) eulogy for Robert Altman to kiss her flacktastic posterior:

"When I got the reports that he had died, I reached Lindsay on her cell phone, and she had no idea. She was devastated. She started crying," Sloane told Reuters. "She quickly put something together on her Blackberry."

"Here was a girl who found something special in this man that she felt so close to," Sloane said. "And she was completely shocked and blown away that he just died. It was written very quickly and it was from the heart." [....]

"Its enough already," she said. "Everybody has got to get a life. People need to get off her back."

It seems to us that Zelnick's lashing out might be a case of displaced anger, as much of the mockery could have been avoided if the publicist had said, "You know what? You're still in shock, why don't you let me draft a brief statement expressing your condolences?" instead of, "Hey, it's a little crazy over here right now. Would you mind tapping something out on the Blackberry thingy while the pain is still fresh? And would you mind throwing in a part that might allude to your possible involvement in a 12-step program? You know, the fearless moral inventory stuff? I think we need to prepare people for the sobering-up story we're gonna get into Page Six next week. Thanks, honey!"

Reminds me of a work memo we got a few years back. The occasion, a co-worker's brother had died. The memo informed all that he had "pasted away".   Made me wonder if he'd been sent to the ol' glue factory.

When hearing tha Vince Foster had committed suicide I heard someone say, "Yeah, and the police suspect foreplay."  This was the same kid who talked about the first book of the Old Testament as "Genocide."
