Saw this and knew it had to be posted and mentioned:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16241340/site/newsweek/

Two page article so it's too long to post here.

so even with the violence, the "civil war", and everything else, the Iraq Economy is booming, having a GDP of somewhere between 4% to 17%.

Has it ever been the case in which a country is at "civil war" and is having such a booming economy? Granted, not everything is good (30-50% unemployment for example) but for a war-torn, just out from under hte iron-fist country, this ain't shabby.

It's always nice to see at least a glimmer of good news out of Iraq.

Jordan .

If the Iraqis could bury ( perhaps that is the wrong word here ) the sectarian warfare and kick the al queda types out of the country , they could be a prosperous successful country. Granted that is a big " If ".  Much of the country is fairly peaceful and under control--the Kurdish areas in the north and even the southern oil fields - semi regular bombings notwithstanding. But that Sunni triangle is a real problem area.  Time will tell how this plays out. It will be a shame if the whole country goes down the tubes for reasons belonging to 800 AD , and not the 21 st century.  I would guess right now the situation is up in the air. All things considered. If only the Sistani Shiites, Kurds and moderate Sunnis would settle down there is still a chance for a relatively positive out come. Then again maybe not. That inscrutable Middle East.

Getting louder all the time, too.

But a friend of mine whose a major player in the stock market is buying up Iraqi dinars.  There must be a reason.

Yes, while not a major player by a long shot ( speaking of longshots ), I did mention I was buying dinars 2 years ago. It was a putting money ( not that much) where my hopes were. Haven't even checked their value for about a year. I have 25,000 dinars at a cost of $ 40 US. At worst a coffee table conversation piece.

Kurdistan is doing well- 50 new hotels under construction and some private transfer of oil reserves could , repeat could, be fortuitous. Let's see  Al Sistani go in partnership with moderate Sunni businessmen and open up thet Baghdad Mitsubishi dealership. Set up a Coke bottling plant .

Dinars have been worth as much as  $ 3 per dinar. so my $40 -in a best case scenario-- years from now -- could be worth $  75,000 US. NO , I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe I'll pick up another 25,000... so let's see $ 150,000 US in oh say 6 years for  $80..

Hey,I just checked. It is $45 for 25,000 dinars now-so the increase has started!

Edit : Disclaimer: I am in no way offering financial advise. Do not make decisions based on my posts. This is solely my statement of having bought Dinars and the possiblity of buying more. Financial investments are inherently uncertain. Loss of investment is a real possibility, especially in a high risk currency market.. ( Can't be too careful in our litigious society )
