Can anyone please tell me if this song is performed by The Crystals or The Ronettes?

I get a little confused when I hear these two names, these two girl bands sound so similar to me that I'm starting to think that they just changed names at one point of their career....

Okay, without Googling, I'm going to try to rekindle my brain waves back to 1963-64 or so when this song was out.  I'm thinking it was the Ronettes with Ronnie Spector who was then married to the now accused murderer Phil Spector. Back then he only held guns to women's heads without pulling the trigger.  Oh, and to some men's heads too like John Lennon.

Be my baby noooooo oooww...

I'll make you happy, baby,

Just wait and see

For every kiss you give me

I'll give you three.

Oh won't you say you love me

I'll make you so proud of me

We'll make them turn their heads dear

Every place we go...

But I could be wrong.  The 45 is in the basement of my parents' house somewhere in the suburbs of Detroit with the rest of my fabulous collection.

Thank you, Susan! I think they're Ronettes too, even though The Crystals do sound very similar.

When I left my parents house to go live by myself together with my love I just took away everything that I owned, also huge stuff. Selfish, ain't I? I should have left some souvenirs for them to remember what a wonderful brat I've been...

You are correct, it is indeed the Ronnettes. I mostly remember because it's on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack which I listened to religiously over the summer of '87...

The song is also featured in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets, during the title sequence and the end credits. Another song by The Ronettes is in there: "The Shoop shoop song", which can be heard during a meeting between Harvey Keitel's character and his girlfriend!!!!

Get the Spector box set or other  collection RIGHT NOW!!! Ronnie's voice is verrrrrry distinctive ( recall her Be My Baby duet on Eddie Money's Take Me Home Tonight, or her duets with Southside Johnny on You Mean So Much To Me Baby, or Joey Ramone on, oh crap, what was that song? Time to Google...)

The Joey duets are Bye Bye Baby (Joey's song) & Johnny Thunders's You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory.

Mr. Silencio the original Shoop Shoop song ( it's in his kiss) was by Betty Everett in 1964.

An IMdb search of the soundtrack of Mean Streets does not show that song- that doesn't mean the listing is complete.

(Cher did a widely played cover of the song from the 1990 movie " Mermaids".) http://www.spectropop.com/femme/betty_everett.html

One of The Crystal's big ones was " Da Do Ron Ron

I'm happy I started this.

Yes, "The shoop shoop song" sung in Mean streets could be a Supremes version, but it is in Mean Streets. Rent it and check it out!

I believe these artists have all sung the same songs sooner or later anyway...

My Italian friend, here are Pete the soldati, our venerable beloved capo George and our smooth councilieri Christopher j/k ( my crew )

Renting Mean Streets is not a bad idea Mr. Silencio. Marty knows that world very well, and any way you slice it that is a great soundtrack.

You can bet Mean Streets is Scorsese almost at his best. Harvey Keitel here is simply breathtaking with his pre-bad lieutenant performance and Deniro looks fabulously like a little lost boy. Good part also for Amy Robinson, who stars in this film only in her entire career before turning up as a producer (she produced After hours)

Ronnie S. sang on the last Raveonettes album, is still performing & has a new cd out (Last of The Rock Stars), with such guests as Keith Richards, Patti Smith & The Raveonettes (who surely must be paying homage to the Ronettes with their own name).

Thanks for that tip on Ronnie's " Last of the rock Stars" OSF. I gotta ( er, have to : ) ) hear some contemporary Ronnie !

Mr. Silencio if you like those old girl groups you might also look up The Chantelles, The Shirelles, the Marvellettes for starters. Did your Dad like those groups ?  Or was your exposure from movies ? The innocent honest unpretentious lyrics and the music is " a beautiful thing" as DL might say.

Erwin : Nicknames have faded with time except mine for some reason. Yes, it is Numbers or Numerator. I'm off to the Valencia Tavern this afternoon-George and Pete will be there among others. Then we go to the "Club" A legally chartered "Businessmens' " social club. After dark and the old Sicilian guys finish their pinocle games we will have a nice late night poker game.  No betting of course, just for the fun of who gets the most chips.

If all goes according to prosecutorial plan, Ronnie may just be a witness against her ex- at his upcoming (supposedly in January) murder trial and testify about his abuse back in their days of marital non-bliss.  Yours truly will do her part and report from the courthouse as I did during the Robert Blake trial.  Should be quite a hoot.

Here's the clip where they perform, I suppose, live, back from 1965.
