Mickey Hart is more than a drummer:  he's a percussionist!  You nead to read "spirit into sound".  The dude is unbelievable.  He goes into caves to hear the water dripping and records that on "planet drum" also a book by the same name.

True that, girl. Mickey is amazing. That is why I put Carl Palmer as number one on my list, not only did he join ELP when he was like 19 or 20 but he was a percussionist too, In their concerts he had not only great drumming but all kinds of percussiion including some great timpani solos.

And listen to Day in the Life! Yes, Ringo started off as a rather poor drummer, what he did was totally unspecific and overly simple. But he developed... I'd say he developed along with the band and that's a lot saying!

Yet he wouldn't be in my top list. That's..

QUOTE:BONHAM, of course.

(...)

GINGER BAKER - the old Cream recordings may be crude and poorly mixed, but listen to the performance!

Yeah, Bonham in such lists is always "of course", I've seen it before. And there's really nothing to say to counter that.

Though Ginger Baker I think I even prefer! As said above - it's not the studio recordings where he plays on 20% of his skills. It's LIVE!!!!!

And there's another favourite I've got - it's Ric Lee from Ten Years After. A fantastic improviser and what's most important to me - he played my favourite kind of drum sound. Very jazz-like actually but with the power of rock added.

Well and anyway, if I was to include the jaz drummers, they would blast away EVERYONE.
It's like with pianists - there are many great ones but ALWAYS the classical pianists are the BEST.
And the best electric guitar players are in rock music.
... And the best drummers are in jazz.

1. Jack Dejonette

and then whoever on my list ;-)

Yeah, I should have mentioned Keith Moon and Charlie Watts, you said it best, John, you can set any clock or watch by hus steadiness, his jazz orchestra was quite good. I was waiting for someone to mention Buddy Rich. Jack D. is great too, loved the trio with him Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden (I think it was Charlie) and speaking of which Pat Metheny Group long time drummer Paul Wertico (no longer with them) is a very steady drummer too, love his style. I never got to see the Police but I did see Oysterhead (Trey Anatasio, Les Claypool & Stuart Copeland) and although I love Les and think Trey is quite skilled, I went to see Stuart and he did not disappoint.

It's "Stewart" not "Stuart" Copeland. As someone whose last last name is usually misspelled, I'm a bit sensitive to the "get the name right" issue.

Carl Palmer is technically accomplished, but I do not "love" him (& he's way too busy to actually "rock", ie: create a pleasing, danceable rhythm).  I prefer tasteful, groove-oriented skinsmen (or women), someone that speaks to my crotch.  Charlie Watts "rocks" & also "swings".   I saw ELP in '73 (I think), after Tarkus came out, with Humble Pie (still with Frampton) opening. ELP were impressive, but I preferred Marriott & co.   And for the record, Carl P. was with Arthur Brown, then left (with Brown's keyboardist Vincent Crane) to form Atomic Rooster, which he left to join ELP.   Underrated drummer of the day: Marky Ramone. Check his work with Richard Hell (as Marc Bell), then how he had to adopt & refine Tommy's stickwork.  Other unheralded punk/new wave pounders: Billy Ficca, Steve Goulding, Pete Thomas, Charlie Charles, D.J. Bonebrake, Martin Chambers,  Topper Headon, just to cite several.  As Stiff Records said "F*@k Art, Let's Dance"!
