I do. It's a habit and as much a part of every morning as a cup o' coffee. But every newspaper is slipping in subscribership.

I just read this about the NY Times, the Mother of All Newspapers. If the Paper of Record is suffering such massive losses, what are the chances for others to survive? How can a newspaper afford its journalists with free websites offering the same information? How can they pay the expenses of foreign journalists? Something's gotta give. And I think it will be the free websites that will little by little cease to exist.

Meanwhile, my LA Times did not come this morning. Sigh. My neighbors got theirs so chances are one of the workers just nicked mine on his way to work on the adjacent neverending house construction. (3 years and counting...)

Later today, I'll have a Wall Street Journal on my driveway. On Sunday, I'll have a big fat NY Times and a big fat LA Times. I'm pretty sure this home delivery vestige from the past will soon be a memory like the horse-driven milk delivery. What am I saying?! Youse guys probably don't even remember motorized milk delivery. Sigh.

Oh well, at least the Gazette will go on and on...

New York Times reports massive loss

Thomas Lifson
Via AP and Breitbart:
The New York Times Co. posted a $648 million loss for the fourth quarter on Wednesday as it absorbed an $814.4 million charge to write down the value of its struggling New England properties, The Boston Globe and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The company said the non-cash charge reflected declines in current and projected results at the newspapers, which have been hit hard by the consolidations of key advertisers in the New England area as well as greater competition from online media.

The company originally paid $1.1 billion for the Globe in 1993 and $296 million for the Worcester paper in 2000.
We saw this coming. When the New York Times Company announced the sale of its profitable television stations, we wondered if it might not sell its terrible investment in the Boston Globe and other New England newspapers at a loss, to avoid paying capital gains taxes. Instead, it took a write-down to balance the capital gain, opening up the possibility of actually booking a profit, once 58% of the purchase price was written off.

The person responsible for this massive loss of shareholder value is Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr., aka "Pinch." When Gerald Levin led Time-Warner into a disastrous merger with AOL, he paid with his job for the blunder. But then, his family didn't control election to the board of directors.

It would appear, based on size of the write-off and the size of the loss, that underlying earnings from operations may actually be up. But without more complete information, it is impossible to say with certainty. However, the stock is up in early trading.

Being in the ink industry, I can say that our newspaper companies are still doing just fine.  Weird huh?

I still buy paper newspapers. However, I'm not a subscriber.

Generally speaking, I find newspaper a more efficient and satisfying way of getting my dose of news stories than either television or internet. Here, I prefer The Australian newspaper but ocassionally suffer the Telegraph or Herald.

Beauty is momentary in the mind -
The fitful tracing of a portal;
But in the flesh it is immortal.
The body dies; the body's beauty lives.
So evenings die, in their green going,
A wave, interminably flowing.
So gardens die, their meek breath scenting
the cowl of winter, done repenting.
So maidens die, to the auroral
Celebration of a maiden's choral.
Susanna's music touched the bawdy strings
Of those white elders; but, escaping,
Left only Death's ironic scraping.
Now in its immortality, it plays
On the clear viol of her memory,
And makes a constant sacrement of praise.

Marin Independent-Journal and The Point Reyes Light. Heavy hitters, here. I-J daily, Light weekly.

Tribune is trying to sell off their money-losing papers (like the LA Diatribe - er - Times). They are also heavily invested in TV and radio stations, most of which are also losing market share.

Old time media faces them changes....

I still read newspapers and you know what,I dont think that another better way of receiving information exsists.I like it because it is selective(not like TV or radio) and to use computer you need time.I never buy them, just read them every morning while having my cup of coffee in a cafe but to have a general idea its really enough, then if I am interested I am looking for more information.Another thing is:I really love starting from the last page(no special reason for this )

Morning coffee+morning newspaper=just great!

Who "Reads" PAPER Pornography?

They'll start putting LCD screens and a T1 connection into the bathrooms at sperm donor clinics any day now.

Bathrooms? Don't they have special rooms for that sort of thing? Or are the sperm donors some kind of testicular supermen that have to rub one out before donating sperm?

Or is sperm donor clinic what you call the rest stops in North/South Carolina?

Yipper, Sadly the only time that I get the opportunity is on the weekend.

How funny!  That's what I was thinking.

I just checked our sales and our newspaper ink manufacturer's sales did drop about $300,000 below budget.  They buy millions a month so it wasn't easy to spot.

Susan said :   " What am I saying?! Youse guys probably don't even remember motorized milk delivery. Sigh. "

I remember a square alumininum insulated box by our back door as a kid. It never had anything in it- it had a flower pot on top of it. BUT, it was for a home delivery of milk ! After many, many years, the artifact was finally thrown out. I wonder if it would have had value at this point-good for e-bay ?

Oh, so newspapers. I'll grab a tabloid type complimentary one for breakfast at a dinner, but that is it. I never watch the broadcast TV networks unless there is a sports event on one of them. "The times are a changin'" B. Dylan

Um, wow. I guess I'll never joke about such a "sensitive" topic ever again. Thanks for setting me straight.

Didn't any of your mothers warn you about discussing politics, religion and paper?

I had a lenghty reply to this, but I guess I took too long to write it, because when I pressed the post message button I got tossed off.

Sorry for further derailing the thread. I just got rubbed the wrong way. (Yes, there is a wrong way.)

But regarding the print media, I hear publications like Newsweek are going to start switching their focus from political matters to Hollywood gossip in order to gain readership.

Oh, wait...

I guess that's already happened.

I occasionally read Alpha magazine (sports mag) and I just ended a 3-month subscription to The Sunday Times, but that's about it for me.

I grew up reading the paper every morning, and never thought I could live without it.  I still have a head full of facts/figures and mostly trivia that I somehow retained from my paper reading days.  Now I spend the mornings doing schoolwork with my kids, teaching my son to read, basic maths etc.  Oh - and getting breakfast for everyone.

So I'd feel a bit selfish and antisocial in my house reading the paper each morning.  What I was doing with the Sunday Times was just reading a bit here and there - generally would finish it around Wednesday/Thursday.

Am I the only one here who just loves to be reading something - anything?

I wish I could remember who, but someone somewhere wrote "Good, now there won't be all those Post-och Inrikes Tidningars lying around all over the place," and I figured that was pretty funny.
