^^^^ Look what the Gazette cynics have done to poor Annie! She's gonna blow! ^^^^

I'll take up Annie's role and get excited simply because I love the warm fuzzy feelings of inner joy that star trek films give me...and there's another one in the pipeline! Yippee!

No fear, LetsRoque!  I really do like Star Trek (but would have preferred a TNG-oriented one); it's just the sequel part that got to me.  It seems to be never ending...

Crap. I kept hoping that they would never greenlight this one. It's been in the works for at least a year, and quite frankly I couldn't imagine a worse premise. They need to let the Trek franchise rest for a while before they do any more damage to it. Berman and Braga are the two biggest idiots I have ever seen.

QUOTE:Berman and Braga are the two biggest idiots I have ever seen.

From what I understand, they don't have anything to do with this.

Since I've never seen M:i:III (or however the hell you spell it), or any episode of Felicity, Alias, or Lost, I have absolutely no idea if J.J. is the man for the job or not. But I'll consider this film a way to gauge expectations for his Dark Tower project.

Hey, I'm just wonderin', is this gonna be the one where Spock & Kirk finally, y'know, "do it"? Casting suggestion: Kyle Maclachlan as Kirk & Sherilyn Fenn as Spock. Hot...

Star Wars has run it's course - no more planned.

LOTR appears to be at an impasse - or is the Hobbit being made?

Of course there's no more TP going to happen.

Rocky has had his last bought.

Which leaves slim pickings for legendary sequels or prequels.

Rumour has it another Rambo will soon be released, and another Star Trek sounds like gold in these lean times.

I really look forward to these continuances of popular series, so bring it on!!

Ok, serious question now...

What happened to Schatner's face?  To me, it looks like someone who's had plastic surgery in the form of facelifts, and then put on excessive weight, stretching it out of all proportion.

At times it looks like his eyes barely open.  What's the deal with that?

I agree with Amanda.  If it's true that Braga has nothing to do with this movie, then I have better hope for it.  However, I still wish they would do something new with their storylines.  The quote on the site Kelly linked about Rod's "optimism" is scary for me because it is invariably the adherence to the trekkian "optimism" that makes for stale stories.  Take, for example, DS9, the most awesome Trek franchise EVER (oh yeah, everyone's gonna flame for that!)... it was totally dark and cynical at times but managed to balance it out with optimism.  I heart DS9.  :)

I forgot what point I was making.  Oh well.  :P

Seriously. They should have done something more with Enterprise. There is like a five year lag between "Terra Prime" and "These are the voyages...". I, for one, felt cheated by the last episode and feel that the franchise owes me a decent ending.....seriously...killing ooff your hottest charecter is no way to end a series, and the whole "next generation" Episode ending was crap. Just crap! Okay.... I'm done with the ranting now.

Even though TNG I think is still my favorite, I have to almost agree with Geoff regarding DS9. There were some great episodes in DS9 toward the last few seasons that really made it a GREAT series. So I sorta agree there. I also agree with Chris that Enterprise could've been so much more. Enterprise could've been GREAT but they screwed that up too.

That's why I love Battlestar Galactica (even though most of this season was subpar of the previous seasons) -- even though the last few episodes this season were great.

Sing on, sistah!

Unfortunately TV folks are notorious for putting out truly sh*tty final episodes for much-loved series'. It's like they feel they owe it to the fans to create this big BANG! ending for us. When seriously, we want to just be left feeling warm and sad.

There hasn't been a Trek finale yet that I've been happy with. TNG was too wacky, even though honestly, I did love the very last scene with Picard joining them for poker, and he says "I should have done this long ago." And then the closing line "So, five card stud, nothing wild...and the sky's the limit..." I have to admit it made me cry but only because for a brief moment that reminded me of how great the series had been at its pinnacle. They could have saved me two hours of my time and just cut to that scene. And no shock, the episode was written by the King of Sh*t himself, Brannon Braga. He has actually been quoted as saying he felt it was the best Trek script he's ever written. Whatever, dude.

DS9's finale wasn't so bad, but it still left me a bit cold. I think maybe I just didn't want everyone to dissipate into the universe the way they did. There was just something about all those folks working together for all those years that appealed. It was like separating limbs from a body. And the Voyager finale...no comment. BLAH.

And Enterprise? Cheesedicked...but I'm not sure what else they could have really done. Manny Coto was the only hope that series had and he wasn't allowed to write the final ep...that was of course done by the BRILLIANT team of Berman and Braga. *gag*

I am totally looking forward for the new movie!! I personally think the trailer looks great. After seeing how good a reimagination of a show can be (Battlestar Galactiga), I'm looking forward to seeing what they are going to do. We just have to remember that this ain't your usual Star Trek. :) It may suck badly, but I am really hoping it's going to breathe life into the series again.

Bill Hunt over at the Digital Bits is suggesting it may do what Star Wars prequels did for the new generation of viewers - get them excited about the series. For all the horribleness of episodes 1 to 3, it got young viewers into the series.

My roommate and I had a looooooooong debate about this in the car on the way home today. One thing we agreed on...if Kirk is even one-tenth as ridiculous throughout the entire film as he's portrayed in the trailer, we're pissed. Roommate believes Spock will suck also, but I remain optimistic on that front. I am at least pleased with their casting decision. He is the only person in the cast who even REMOTELY resembles the character he plays.

I do not like series/franchise reboots. I can't compare the BG reboot to this Trek reboot because one was a rebooting of an old 70's series that lasted, what, two seasons? (if you count the original incarnation and then that awful 1980's series) This is the rebooting of a massive franchise. I'm already having trouble digesting the ripples it's going to cause in the well-founded Trek canon. Couple with that the fact that JJ Abrams can't seem to be consistent with the quality of his work, and I'm getting stress shits just thinking about what lies in wait for us.

Trek fans, do you believe this movie will be financially successful enough for a sequel and/or a new TV series?

PS- There is also supposedly a live action Star Wars series coming in the next couple of years I can't wait for.

i'm going to watch this on its own merits. trek fans like to say that they hate reboots but if you drop the few nods they gave the old series, TNG is BASICALLY a reboot anyway. and people loved it.

if you can't get a little excited for simon pegg as scotty, you might as well cut your wrists with a rusty old spaghetti-os can and get it over with

As I've said before...I will give the new film a shot. I'm going to avoid trailers and other stuff up until I see it because they just make me cynical. I dig some of the casting choices they made (Pegg as Scotty = smart move) and question others. But whatever.

As far as what the film will do to rejuvenate the franchise...your guess is as good as mine. I don't think they will garner enough new fans to breathe life back into Trek, so they will need to really impress the existing fans to rejuvenate the franchise with this film. It remains to be seen if the film can truly deliver.

Although Kirk looked like an extra from the Twilight film, I thought the commercial they showed during the Super Bowl (I realize this is an artsy, anti-establishment crowd who may have not seen it) last night looked very cool and high budget.  I will see it on 05/08/09, tools.

I had to check the imdb to make sure it was a different actor and not James Marsden after a couple of visits to the plastic surgeon.

I mean the guy playing Kirk, if that wasn't obvious.

I have to say, the new trailer was a lot more impressive. Complete with Eric Bana scenery chewing. Still don't think it's gonna draw me to the theater, though.
