i really wish they had gone for a full-on reboot galactica style. the movie looks great but i fear all the time-travel spock stuff is going to fuck it up

I believe the commercials for the new Trek film look surprisingly good and fresh, but don't you think Trek functions better in the TV medium? I highly prefer watching any of the 5 live action Trek series to the 10 previous Star Trek films any day. A lot of the films seem to get away from what Trek really establishes in the show (example - some of the movies turn into action pics). Plus I seriously cannot watch Insurrection EVER again. What is your take on the Trek series vs the Trek films? I'll take the series every time. Character development rocks.

i think you're crazy, the same thing can be established on the silver screen. hell, mccoy's line in trek III about holding spock's katra, "this is his revenge for all those arguments i won!" shows more depth of character than the entirety of voyager

to be fair that's probably fair market value as they were only ever produced as in-house prototypes

From the look of the trailers, this Trek is obviously being aimed at a young audience. Perhaps even an audience ignorant of any Star Trek incarnation.  For those of us who grew up with TOS, it is hard to believe that a young Kirk, bloodied from a bar brawl, would say "Why are you talking to me, man?"  I can believe the brawl, but the slang use of "man"?  Too contemporary for the future.  Too street for the often eloquent James T.  Of course, all the effects look impressive. I'll wait for it on DVD.

You make some valid points.  I believe you've sold me on this movie and I will check it out tonight when all of the high school and middle school kids are hanging out at the local theater.

I read it as self deprecating humor of the humbert humbert school but on the other hand I know I don't know what is going on and I only suspect you all don't.

OT : It's in IMAX!  Maybe I'll see it.   Might be a hard sell for my movie parner though.

As movies are pretty much what he does any more (he has MS so this is something he likes that is unaffected, mostly, by that) he may well be a huge snob.  But, again, what do I know? He may well be into it. I guess I should ask.
