Scotty had a tribble in his cage!  Uh Oh! Insta-TOS street cred!  JJ Abrams is God!  Woo hoo!

It is going to be an alternate timeline Police Academy reboot so as not to tarnish established canon from this phenomenal franchise.  It will involve time travel and a cameo by the dude who does the 1000 voices and sound effects to push the hipper, sexier cast in the right direction.

FWIW, Fud, JJ Abrams has the rights to Stephen King's Dark Tower series and plans to start preproduction after LOST is over LOL.  What's your take on this?

QUOTE:KahlanMnel, I figured you were not going to like the new movie which is okay :).  I would love to hear your detailed review of the film sometime -the good, the bad, and the ugly because I respect your Trek knowledge like no other.  I liked it a lot because it felt new and fresh, but it did feel more like a Star Wars or a dumbed down Star Trek 90210 movie.  Whenever you get some time, let me know.

I should have some time this coming weekend. I should step back and say that I enjoyed every minute of the film. I didn't sit there with my arms crossed going "Hmph! Fuck you, Abrams!" It was a fun little ditty of a flick. But there were still a lot of flaws that irritated me on the back end (Booth, behave!) that I think really remove this film from being jerked-off the way everyone is doing. Either we're SUPER starved for entertainment right now or we've really lost our perspective as to what makes a great film.

As an aside...I won't even count this new Trek film into my ranking of the previous ten Trek films. I don't think it's fair, much in the same way that I don't count Halloween III when I'm ranking the Halloween series films. I think the new film operates so far outside of the realm of the other ten films that it would do a disservice to both the new film and the old ones.

I like Lost and Dark Tower (books 2-4 only), but I have a hard time seeing how something so epic from King is going to fly with Abrams helming it.  All hail the Crimson King!

what's truly breathaking is that both suck in the exact same way. you start out, and at the beginning, there's clearly Something Happening. some INTERESTING. and the creators/author are really enjoying themselves, and having fun getting lost in this new scenario. then, it's time to actually answer questions and go beyond the initial setup, and they take a big runny shit right down their legs. i can't wait for the immense clusterfuck when they finally have to end lost, i get the feeling it's going to make the end of the dark tower look fantastic.

Don't get me started on the end of Dark Tower. I loved every page of that series, except the last one. Damn. He should've left that off entirely and made the previous "this is almost the end" scene the REAL ending.

Did you ever read King's afterword to the last volume? He KNOWS the end sucks! UGH! Now I'm all grumpy...

i actually liked the very very end, with the cycling. i just hated everything before that. the ultimate threat to all existence is a crazy old guy lobbing grenades off a balcony, and he's defeated by some dumbass kid from a book i haven't read? bravo, senor king. i hope you die of eye herpes

King's ego couldn't fit inside the state of Texas.  Inserting himself as a character in the story and his overall pompous attitude about how important and meaningful his lifelong epic was rubbed me the wrong way.

Ka is a wheel!

EDIT - borrowed from liljaslibrary

As “Star Trek” makes its case for the new J.J. Abrams age of the franchise this weekend, he and fellow “Lost” creator Damon Lindelof continue to have early discussions about Stephen King’s cult series of books “The Dark Tower.” Lindelof confirmed Abrams’ assertion that “Lost” is priority number one at the moments, but said the project would require at least as much care as Zack Snyder’s adaptation of “Watchmen.”

“Having seen Zack go through what he went through on ‘Watchmen’ in terms of saying of where can I digress from the material I just get headaches thinking about changing anything,” Lindelof told MTV News. “It was the defining literary tale of my young adulthood into adulthood.”

Lindelof is keenly aware of how that level of attachment can affect his approach to the project. “My reverence for Stephen King is now getting in the way of what any good writer would do first when they’re adapting a book, which is take creative license in changing stuff,” he explained.

If the Hollywood power duo indeed moves on to King’s fantasy/Western tale when they finish with “Lost” it may be an extended commitment in addition to being a demanding one, given the scope of the seven-book series.

“Paramount is certainly looking at it as a franchise movie and thinking about sequels but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves,” Lindelof said. “Ideas have been thrown around that are very informal at this point.”

And more formal conversations very well may not be in the cards until the fates of Oceanic Flight 815’s passengers are firmly on the ground for the the “Lost” finale.

king suffered brain damage, his books started suffering after the accident. you can literally tell the chapter in wolves of the calla he was writing when it happened, because it goes from a well-thought-out retelling of seven samurai to DOCTOR DOOM WIELDING A LIGHTSABER!!!!

remember when he got rid of the black orb in the 9/11 attacks? classsssy.

I can't believe the nuStar Trek movie gave homage to The Phantom Menace!  WTF?!?!?!!? The monster in the snow chasing Kirk gets eaten by the even BIGGER monster in the snow.  "There is always a bigger fish," Qui Gon Jinn says as the heroes in Star Wars ride their underwater boat through the planet core of Naboo.  Are you kidding me?  "Hey, let's copy Phantom Menace!  That was awesome!   It was only like a decade ago too!"  JJ Abrams is God!

On a more somber note, I may purchase the Uhura action figure this evening and set her on my night stand and gaze lovingly at the boiling hotness that is Uhura and think unnatural thoughts.  *cues up "Hello" by Lionel Richie*

william i am not being sarcastic or mean when i say i am fascinated by the fact that you seem to hold dear all the nerd candy i can't stand. how far does this rule extend? how do you feel about the star wars prequels, the original theatrical version of blade runner, and the ultimates 3?
