That would be a happening. Even more fab would be Patti singing with her idol Ronnie Spector (as she does on Ronnie's 2006 CD).

REM's entry should be a no-brainer - they're simply brilliant.

Van Halen I heard were re-forming recently with Lee-Roth for a concert tour...but looking at their website looks like there's trouble before they even started.  If it's not personal bickering this time, I'm guessing it has something to do with a 50 yo trying to squeal out the essential notes from some of their classics.  How could that happen without some sort of operation?

Grandmaster Flash...ok.  Not my taste, but I guess so.

Ronettes etc - sorry, I listen to a range of music, but I don't recall them.

My thoughts exactly. I already knew about Stipe and Co., but Patti Smith is news to me.

Also, the rumor is that Bill Berry will be reuniting with them on stage.

Eddie Vedder will do the induction speech for REM. Lets hope he's sober and quicker on his feet this time around.

I hope not to the exclusion of Scott McCaughey! He's dedicated about a decade to REM & I'm sure that touring, etc. was at least a part of breaking up his marriage.

Don't know The Ronettes, etc. (etc.? what ,Patti Smith?) ? Well, lucky (or unlucky) you, as they're the best of this bunch! Patti: one word- Horses, get it :STAT!  The Ronettes were a creation of Phil Spector, featuring the lead vocals of his one time wife Ronnie (big in the early-mid '60s. You've at least heard Be My Baby). She's since put out solo stuff, collaborating with George Harrison, Southside Johnny, Billy Joel, Eddie Money, Joey Ramone, among others.  Her alto vibrato is one of the most distinctive & sultry in popular music.    As for Van Halen (one of the most overrated bands of all time), I'm sure it's an ego thing. Roth is way too full of himself to let his voice or his body go (unlike Eddie, see pic). As for your age-ist nonsense, uhhh, of the Famer vocalists Roth is 52, Stipe 47, Flash 48, Smith 60, & Spector 63.  Bet Ronnie'll sing the pants off of ALL of 'em.

I'm not a fan of Grandmaster Flash at all, not my ways in music, but I think they (or should I say he?) did more good to music than Van Halen...

Ronettes - nope.

Patti Smith - nope.

But I will try and have a listen to some of their gear now you mention it...

As for Van Halen (one of the most overrated bands of all time),

I don't think they were musical geniuses, or that their songs are timeless classics, but their guitar-work in particular did set a new standard, and their music, fashion etc muscially marked a moment in time.  Back that up with their longevity and they have a case for the HOF.

I'm sure it's an ego thing. Roth is way too full of himself to let his voice or his body go (unlike Eddie, see pic).

That's a shocking pic of Eddie - I guess living hard does take it's toll.  Yep it's probably ego - but is it the clashing egos of the band members, or Roth not wanting to tour in a sub-standard state?

As for your age-ist nonsense, uhhh, of the Famer vocalists Roth is 52, Stipe 47, Flash 48, Smith 60, & Spector 63.  Bet Ronnie'll sing the pants off of ALL of 'em.

Age-ist nonsense?  For suggesting Roth may not be able to hit the same notes as he did 20+ years ago?  I thought that was fair speculation actually...

Listen to Jump again, or half of their collection in fact - the squealing, the high pitch notes - I'd be very impressed if he could still belt those out to a standard worthy of a concert.  I would love to be wrong though...that's not being an age-ist, but a realist.

Looks like Eddie converted his garage studio into a meth lab.

I think it's great that Bill Berry is going to be there with them and I am sorry about the marital problems Scott had (if this is an accurate statement)if they are related to touring with REM. However, Bill was the drummer for REM for 16 years (if you count the pre-Murmur era) and he completed the Monster tour after having an aneurysm while they were touring in Europe and completed a new CD while they were on that tour, which became New Adventuires in Hi-Fi, before retiting and becoming a simple Georgian farmer, so I think Bill has dedicated enough of himself to the institution of REM to be on stage with his former bandmates and accept this honor.

Didn't get to see this, but reports seem to indicate it was a hell of a show--- with the exception of the Van Halen crap. My word, "ROCK 'n' ROLLLLLLLL!!!" or just  pathetic?  I vote for the latter. Never cared for these hairfarmin' dimbulbs to begin with, so it's hard to feel sorry for them. Whatever...

Grandmaster Flash deserves his spot if only for this masterpiece . I'm only serious. Love this song! But not this version .

Just got to see a rerun of the Hall of Fame awards show. That pirate Keith Richards starts it off introducing the Ronnettes and they did Be My Baby. Beautiful. Ronnie gave thanks to a cat you should check out some time-her idol- Frankie Lymon of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Up next is Van Halen....hmmm  oh well I have someplace to go. I've seen the women I was most interested in already.  I regret missing Patti Smith however.
