Yup, Raymond is correct -- Sunday, April 8 on HBO. David Chase is adding an additional episode to the 8 previously promised for this final season, which is technically Part II of Season 6. Here is an interesting piece of information I read in Variety this week. I wish I hadn't read it. I try to stay clear of any hint of what's to come with The Sopranos. So if you don't want ANY kind of spoiler, do not read the following. It doesn't SAY anything explicitly but one can infer some things from this. For one thing, the FINAL SCENE of the FINAL episode (9th), has not been shot.
SPOILER ALERT (not major.... probably) 'SOPRANOS' GETS ITS SHOT Variety, Monday, March 12, 2007 By JOHN CLARKE JR. New York The New Jersey town that blocked production of HBO's "The Sopranos" has been forced to allow shooting. Cabler was set to shoot a scene March 22 in a Bloomfield ice cream shop near Newark, NJ, but Mayor Raymond McCarthy and the Town council illegally denied Sopranos Prods. a filming permit, saying they felt the show negatively portrayed Italian-Americans. Scene that the production crew applied for to shoot is the last shot of the last episode. According to township attorney Brian Aloia, permits are given based on meeting certain legal requirements, not project content. The clerk who received the application brought it to the council and mayor, who then tried to deny the application, Aloia said. "Basically, the clerk should have looked at teh application objectively and not at waht was being filmed," Aloia said.
With the season premiere 3 weeks away, I would have assumed the whole thing was in the can. Did David Chase decide to add something after the fact? Was the delay just because the permit had been held up in legal entanglements? Nah, I doubt it. They could have moved to a different location if it were just about the clerk and the permit. Did Chase have a change of heart about how to conclude the series? Did he want to film it as late as possible to avoid any of the plot from being leaked? And what could be the inferred questionable "content" that will be filmed next week in an ice cream shop??? Blood and gelato? Oh gawd, I wish I didn't know this information though I'm sure it will still be a surprise. Wait a minute! Maybe the answer lies within the concern over "negative portrayals of Italian-Americans." Hmmm. Could it be that Tony and Christopher end up gorging on Baskin-Robbins triple scoops thereby demeaning Italian Americans by suggesting it's better than gelato? Raymond, you may need to take a little jaunt over to Bloomfield and get the inside skinny. Just don't tell me until it's over though!
I'm so excited about the final season! April 8th is Lola the lab's 5th birthday, it's Easter Sunday and it's the season opener of The Sopranos!!! Chocolate bunnies and disorganized crime! Susan
