I don't believe I've seen these mentioned anywhere on here yet.

The Brights is an organisation aiming to change the nomenclature people use, who would normally call themselves atheists, agnostics or humanists.  Basically, they hope to change the language in the same way that homosexuals became 'gay' (sort of).

They think that if people refer to themselves this way - 'I am a Bright' - then politicians may take notice of them as a constituency, etc.

They are very clear on the matter that 'Bright' should be used as a noun.

If there has to be an umbrella term, it shouldn't be "Bright", it sounds awful, more new-age than anything else. It makes me think of stuff like indigo children.

It all reads like a counter-attack/movement against the Creationists. Figuring that the Evolutionists label isn't getting them anywhere, they've ditched that and come up with The Brights.

Yeh.

Way-to-go there fellas.

That'll work.

Really.

Btw, did anyone else read all that blurb with the voice of a QVC American drawl commentary running through their mind?

On the second day he came
With a single red rose
Said "Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?"
I nodded my head as I lay on the bed
He said, "If I show you the roses will you follow?"

On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he stood smiling above me
With a rock in his fist

They call me the wild rose
But my name was Eliza Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Eliza Day

The name is a drawback. People will just assume one is being arrogant if they refer to themselves as a Bright.

Also a drawback is that their natural constituency isn't exactly what you would call 'joiners'.  And of course, aside from not having any beliefs in the supernatural, the constituency might not be closely sharing moral and/or political values and aims.

Also, can you force a meme like this into public consciousness?

Nevertheless, more power to them, for now.

The Brilliants might be better nomenclature.
