...Kurt Vonnegut died at age 84. Sigh. Man, we got a lot of laughs out of him and many quotes back in the 1970s. When riled, I still like to say, "No one f***s around with Paul Lazarro!" We once got a puppy from the dog pound -- cute little thing -- and named him Chronosynclastic Infundibulum, or "Chrono" for short. And we always say and "so it goes."
As many funny men before him, he had a dark interior and suffered depression. Having had a mother who committed suicide probably didn't help.

This was the first thing I saw when my homepage opened up today, How sad. One of the greatest. My freshman year of college, one thing I'll always remember was reading Galapagos one quarter and doing a paper on it. Our graduate student TA was cool.

I just got on line and saw this. How very sad. It's been a long time since I read his stuff, but I'm sure all those books are somewhere. I didn't know about his history of depression. RIP, Mr. Vonnegut

I am so very sad, KV was (is) my favorite author. I was in Manhatten when I heard the news so I promptly picked up a copy of "Man Without a Country" and sat in a cafe and read it cover to cover in memorium. The world needs more humanists! Here are some great words from the man: "Socialism is no more an evil word than Christianity. Socialism no more prescribed Joseph Stalin and his secret police and shuttered churches than Christianity prescribed the Spansih Inquisition. Christianity and socialsim alike, in fact, prescribe a society dedicated to the proposition that all men, women and children are created equal and shall not starve." The crucified planet Earth should it find a voice and a sense of irony, might now well say of our abuse of it, "Forgive them, Father, They know not what they do." The irony would be That we know what We are doing. When the last living thing Has died on account of us, How poetical it would be If Earth could say, In a voice floating up Perhaps From the floor Of the Grand Canyon, "it is done." People did not like it here.

I heard Jon Stewart slip in a "So it goes..." just before commerical break on his show Thursday night. Thought it a nice little tribute. Also, I clearly need to read some more Vonnegut. I read his last two books, I believe, but I haven't read any of his fiction.
