Odd... I thought the end of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was by far the worst part of the movie... great movie though.

I like it 'cause I'm a mushy gal--big ol' sap, that's me. :) LOL After all that comedic Hell, they all make it home for Thanksgiving. Awww.

There are so many but the one which moved and shook me the most in my life was Dead Poets Society's Oh Captain My Captain. I cry in the cinema rather rarely but there I completely lost control and sobbed like all hell.... and not just for the first time, for the second time I saw it even more! Heh, quite probable that today I would find this film oversentimental or something and it wouldn't impress me nearly as much as it used to. Who knows. I was 15 then. But still - no other ending has ever impressed me as much.

I can't believe so many of you are saying One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I love that film but I thought that the ending was too sad. I love the ending of Vertigo and Strangelove.

What's wrong with sad endings? I love them, I'm getting tired of those films where everything goes wrong for everyone, there's pain and sadness....but suddenly everything fixes and in the words of Jean Renault: everrrybody happy...

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of Before Sunset... good one! Definitely the Godfather as well; but Return of the Jedi?....

Yeah, the ending to Return Of The Jedi sucked. I was thinking of the scene between Luke and Vader but that isn't the ending. I didn't think of it until after I posted it.

As fabulous as every other moment of it, isn't it? But how riveting and comforting it is! The hope it brings. Most of all though - the film imagination and genius it shows.
As for One Flew Over.... - I don't find it sad, really! It made me wanna fly! The Chief with that heavy thing, being able to lift it up and with it force his way to freedom - to me it's as if someone freed himself from an iron ball chained to his leg and started to run, if not fly...! It's a marvellous ending.

Thank you, BOB1. I was waiting for someone to explain how the ending of Cuckoo;s Nest is, as you so succinctly put it, a marvelous ending.

I just sawa 8 1/2, and I loved it... until the end. There were entirely too many endings. The thing must've ended 3 or 4 times.... definitely not one of my fave ending scenes.
