I know, I know...Lynch has a thing for wigs...and I know Sheryl Lee had short hair when they filmed the movie, so they needed to give her longer locks, but does anyone else here have trouble staying "in" the movie, FWWM, while Sheryl's/Laura's gigantic wig is on-screen? Am I the only one who's completely distracted by this big old, brushed out, hot-roller-curled, dried up mass on her head? Couldn't they have done a better job? Here are examples of Sheryl's/Laura's real hair, from the show –then her wig/hairpiece 'do from the movie:

Yes, I have always lived in fear of the wig.  But you'd be surprised how many people (even those on this board) refused to believe that it was a wig when I expressed my fears.  !!!!

FEAR THE WIG!  IT WILL EAT YOUR SOUL!!

Are you saying  that it was Lee's actual hair in the show (it's hardly short, & not that much diiferent, except somewhat stylistically from the FWWM 'do)?  Sheryl/Laura is gorgeous & I would ask the wig for it's bangs in marriage (if it's not already spoken for).  Now I suppose you're going to say that Maddy was wearing a "piece"!!!

So it was a wig in the movie?

I thought it was just one of those late 80's/early 90's big bad hairdos.

It is indeed a wig –or a hairpiece, rather...not in the show, but in the film. Shortly before filming FWWM Sheryl Lee had cut her hair short, so they had to fashion a hairpiece for her to wear. Sheryl Lee IS lovely, I can't agree with you more. I'm not complaining about her, it's the WIG! Here's a screen capture from FWWM where the hair piece is in big danger of falling off.

If you want to see a horrible wig check Robin Tunney's in THE CRAFT... She had just filmed EMPIRE RECORDS and had very short hair...

But Lee's wig is terrible of course...

Actually, yes, Maddy wore a wig in every episode in the second season.

GUH. Robin's wig in The Craft is so yucky...it's more of a distraction than Neve Campbell's acting.

Sheryl's hair in FWWM is OK sometimes (when she talks to James in front of her house, for example) but most of the time I'm afraid it's going to come through the screen and eat my face off. At any rate, for a while there in high school I really wanted hair like that. I tried to style mine into that amazing bouffant she has going in the final scene for homecoming my senior year, but real hair just doesn't hold up that well.

I just laughed SO hard when you said that you were afraid it might eat your face!!!!! Thanks, I needed that!

Also, that weird spidery cowlick thing her hair does in the front is new in FWWM (the top left pic in the FWWM collage charles made above exhibits this)... didnt see that on Maddy or corpse/flashback Laura... so it's more fuel to the wig fire.

i thought sheryl wasn't wearing a wig during the 1st seasonof the series, except for the blond one, when she desguised herself as Laura.

You're right. When Sheryl played Laura early in the show, she did not wear wig. But Sheryl wore a wig after the first season as Maddy. Here's a still from the first season (no wig) followed by a still from an episode in season 2 where she's wearing a wig that's much thicker than Sheryl's hair (same issue as in FWWM--wig is too big/thick).

Yeah, they definitely de-geeked Maddy for the second season.

Yes, the wig was insane. You'd think they would've chosen one that was vaguely similar to Laura's on the show, but instead they scalped a Texas cheerleader. But hair consistency was evidently never a big priority on TP. Donna and Audrey each gained several inches. Then you remember that the entire series was supposed to have taken place in, what, a couple weeks?

Holy crap- I never noticed that her piece was so obvious in FWWM.

But it's true that all the suburbanites wanted rock video ho hair back then.

It's such a shame that Donna and Audrey got to have cute retro hair and Laura's looked kinda trashy, giving away the age of the show. But I guess the big hair adds to Laura's "bad girl" personality.

Makes you wonder why she didn't let her real hair grow before filming started.  She had over a year to get ready for what might have been the biggest role in her career.  I think the wig is what makes her look like the world's first 40-year-old high school student in FWWM.

Laura is still not the oldest looking high school student....that honor will always go to the cast of Grease.

My friends and I always joked about how in Twin Peaks, there must be something in the water that makes women's hair grow overnight. The worst offenders have to be Audrey and Donna. I mean, Donna's hair is way longer at the start of season 2 than the end of season one. Did Donna go get extensions that morning to be "more like Laura?" They must have some upscale salons out in Twin Peaks! I always noticed the difference in Maddy's hair as well, but that wasn't really bad continuity to me....after all, she could have just started to use different product in her hair. It's not as radical a difference as Donna and Audrey's overnight sensations.

Is it a tie or does Audrey win the Two Week Miracle Hair Growth contest?

Donna wins, because her face got longer as well.  And continues to.

Charles, you've ruined the movie for me! I never thought it was a wig and now I can't think of anything else. :D

Well, if I can cope with Donna slowly changing from a stunning cutie to an unattractive snob during the first 17 episodes I guess I can handle this fact too :)

Yah, but that was totally the point, I think.  They wanted her to start looking and acting more like Laura, like the forces of being in TP were bringing it out in her.  Ultimately, it would be what would draw BOB's attention and make him start to terrorize her.  So, new TP theory:  BOB is not attracted to garmonbozia as was previously thought.  Rather, he's got a fetish for great big acrylic 80s hair.  WOOT, BOB, WOOT.

In one of the cut scenes in the script of episode 8 or 9, Maddy actually says something about wearing Laura's clothes.  I definitely see it in the show, but it's probably a good thing they cut the dialog.  It's a little creepy, and I imagine it would have been strange to Leland and Sarah to see their identical-to-their-daughter looking niece wearing Laura's clothes.  The sunglasses were more subtle, and I liked that.
