if it wasn't for those damn "tax cuts for the rich," then the US govt wouldn't have had the biggest 1 day tax revenue in history:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070425/us_nm/usa_treasury_taxes_dc_1

U.S. tax receipts from individuals hit a record one-day high of $48.7 billion on April 24, a Treasury Department official said on Wednesday.

The previous record was $36.4 billion, set on April 25, 2006, said Jennifer Zuccarelli, a Treasury spokeswoman.

The record reflects taxes not withheld from individuals over the course of the year, but paid to the government before this year's April 17 income-tax deadline.

While some of those tax payments come from taxpayers who withheld less tax from their paychecks than they owed, much of it was owed on income from investments or profits.

"This reflects the fact that Americans in high-income brackets had a very good year in 2006," said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The one-day total is a small fraction of the estimated $2.5 trillion in overall tax receipts the government is likely to collect in fiscal 2007, Crandall said.

But strong tax revenues point to the likelihood of a shrinking budget deficit, he said.

---

After two years of record-breaking revenue after tax cuts do you think that it might just prove that cutting taxes just right is GOOD for the economy and GOOD for the federal govt? Nah.....that's just too coincidental.

Well, capitalist pig that I am, I like budget reduction, a better balance of trade -although I am against tarriffs and the like, and for free world trade, I'd like the rich to use their money to form companies to put us people to have jobs-yes I know we have lost manufacturing jobs etc., but we can with entreprenurial vigor develope new services and products  and jobs- I know we can do it my fellow Americans. Also lets cut out the " pork barrel" projects-both parties guilty by the way, stop wasteful spending by government - both parties partially to blame. Let's be smart in our tax policy with reasonable tax cuts, we can all work together and make things better for everybody-including the single parent with kids on welfare. Let's all be productive and thrive. I do care about the poor. I want their lot to inprove and entreprenureship funded by the rich can be a step towards that goal. Lets have a country with serious differences for sure, and yet still be allied citizens all, brothers and sisters. and make things better, together... at the end of the day.

Low Taxes + budget cuts (reducing social programs) - pork-barreling = more money for the federal govt with fewer people who think the govt owes them something.

We can do everything you say, Ray, but it's going to require a 180 degree shift in thinking and behavior in the federal, state and local levels.

Well lets all do it. Another thing I'd like to extent it  : civilized behavior worldwide. No, not what form of government a counrty chooses or their internal workings -thats their business. I like all peoples  ( and most animals) on the planet. I like Asians,Latinos, Blacks, Atheists, Most Moslems with that terrorist cancer withstanding, I like Jews, Buddhists, Hindustanis, socialists, Europeans, I like all of humanity except the bad actors. Lets all trade, and do fair business amongst all of us humans-if we want to of  course  -win win stuff, forgive the past -all around, and give this beautiful planet and this gift of life all the support we can. We are after all the same species, we are all brothers and sisters.

I want to improve this earth in any small way I can. There are a great crop of young people coming up and the future can be brighter-never without bad shit happening - but brighter. I know it can happen. e,g. China prospers and relaxes mistreatment of citizens and others. Moslems exile and shun terrorist jihadis. It can happen.

Now, let's look at tariffs. They are a regressive tax, like the sales tax, that hurts everybody, rich and poor alike. You want to buy a Toyota Pious, er, I mean Prius, most of which are made in mainland China by the way, a nice autocratic Communist society in which most of the workers are equivalent to sweat shop slaves. But you don't feel bad about that, because after all, it's not being assembled in Haiti by sweat shop slaves of color. You don't KNOW about the conditions in China.

Then, your Pious gets to the US dealership, who marks it up 10-20,000 dollars more than LIST PRICE! Because after all, you white middle class guilt blob, you certainly want to be as GREEN as you can be... despite Al Gore tromping around in a private jet and SUV caravans, and you appreciate the 'tariffs' that 'equalize' free trade.

WRONG, Dumb Man!!! Tariffs on Imports do two things, and two things only.... They INCREASE the cost to you the sorry ass consumer, and they FATTEN the coffers of the US Gubbamint, because the tariffs go to the great sewer called the US General Fund, and end up paying for welfare and social services to Illegal Aliens.

How do you like THAT script!? It's REALITY, Jack, and you'd beter get used to it. NEVER support a tariff or punitive Import Tax. You are only slicing your own _______ (insert anatomical part) off!

Get it!?

Oh man , I get it in spades -  thats why I'm against tarrifs up above ! And you explained the why for ( against). You are hitting the right notes with me , you must have some libertarian leanings like me .

I may have waxed a bit over board with my hope for a change in China's treatment of citizens and others -but maybe the youth will bring change to that regime, Do you think I'm dreaming with muslim states shuning and kicking out Islamic terrorists ? Those two changes and the kicking out of the Mullocracy in Iran are my hope. I came back from the tavern with an optimistic glow. A hopefull buzz I guess. Am I dreaming John, don't misunderstand -it was beer and pool I've never done ecstacy.   Anyway it's  several hours later and I'm not as optimistic at this point.

Well they reckon communist states have a shelf life of about 70 years, and given the world's eyes will be on china next year with the bejing olympics, I'm hopeful that systematic change will be accelerated in that strange country.

'I look for an opening, do you understand?'
