Jimmy Osterberg (Iggy Pop) is from my area of the suburbs of Detroit, and we knew each other well in the late 60s.

He is the son of a working class family that did not have much, but made it in a certain way in Industrialized detroit, and he glommed on to the worker's revolution/Angst-ridden Detroit protest Pop of the time, including my pals the MC5.

What Iggy did differently, though, is that he walked the walk. He cut himself, to show that his words were real, he leapt and screamed for the feeling and not just the show. Let me tell you, from teenagers together, I know, he is totally real and lives his music.

Now let's look at Mariah... (ooopppss....runs for door, vomiting on carpet on the way...) Um, from Puerto Rico, maybe a small home start in life, but when she hit, she was a QUEEN! False dance disco-type queen, but the media darling of the day.

Then she marries Tommy "Tony Soprano" Mottola and becomes this pampered, sequestered, eventually beaten suburban housewife, who happened to also be one of Tommy's most money generating dance queens. As well as his possession, kept in a fenced, locked estate with armed guards and dogs patrolling the perimeter. Yes, in Beautiful New Jersey!

Yup, Lotsa points between Iggy and Mariah.... HUH? WTF were they THINKING!?

Yeah, you could touch up that skin in the photo, but there's still a difference.

Years ago when they first began, we had really good front row seats for Cirque du Soleil. One of the stars was this gymnast with a body very much like Iggy's. Since I was so close, I couldn't help but notice the skin. Couldn't take my eyes of that skin. From every angle, I kept staring at the texture.  I became distracted. What made him look his age in spite of his toned athletic body? It was skin, skin, skin.

Haha, there was a cartoon in the paper the other day of a futuristic retirement community. Three old guys are sitting around discussing what their tattoos once were. Was it a mermaid? A lightning bolt? Stretched out old skin with ages old ink.

You can see on Iggy's upper chest what looks to be some of the scarification probably from the good old days. Like John, I lived in Detroit back than and saw Iggy and the Stooges performances. My boyfriend back then used to note how, right before the Stooges came on stage, the audience would back up. "Bad vibes," he used to say.

I've watched him wriggle through shards of broken glass. I've watched him scraping his body with those shards. Arghhhhhhh. I was never a fan. Didn't like Chris Burden's performance art either. Or Vito whats-his-name. Iggy's act caused one fellow Detroiter to extrapolate into what the future of rock might be if it followed the Iggy trajectory. Live on stage amputations? Thankfully, he was wrong on that prediction but it's understandable to have guessed as much.

Never been to a Mariah Carey concert.

It's worth reading the article - for a chuckle - well maybe not all 18 pages, but a few...      ;-)

No-one's seriously trying to compare the two, but both are icons in their own way.

Iggy was real, original, and stretched the boundaries (and his skin apparently while he was at it).  As JN said - he walked the walk, and made a big impression on so many other acts.

Purely as a talent, I don't rate him...but as a performer he's made an indelible mark.

Mariah Carey, aside from being one of the most gorgeous entertainers of the past century, also possessed (es?) an amazing voice.  What she lacked in the performance department, she made up for in pure vocal skill.

She also left her mark - with a string of hit songs, and record sales around the world.

So I take my hat off to both of them.  If I were listening to a CD, I'd probably listen to Mariah.  If I was going to a concert, Iggy would get the nod.

No, this is the finally.... You all come on here anonymously and rant and take absurd, sometimes righteous, sometimes fallacious and sometimes non defendable positions, and you take pride in and hide in your anonymity. I come on here in the full light of day and I have just as much right to rant or poke holes in things as you do. There is also usually a rather facetious (some would say fEcetious!) slant to mah rant, that some see thruogh and others (D'oh!) don't but that's OK.
