2 new titles out this week, El Topo and Holy Mountain, along with Fando Y Lis, which has apparently been out for a while, but I've never seen it. Some highly acclaimed stuff, El Topo was featured along Eraserhead in the Midnight Movies documentary. I rented Holy Mountain to see what AJ is about, and this is some insanely great stuff. Dense, poetic, artful, surrealist, alternately violent and very funny. Definitely worth a look.

A.J. was also a potential director of Dune from an adaptation by , I believe, Salvador Dali, with production design by , I think,  Moebius.  If these memories are erroneous, I'm sure I'll be corrected. My fave of his is Santa Sangre.  El Topo is /was reportedly, John Lennon's favorite film & he gave money to A.J. to complete,  if memory seves, Holy Mountain.  PLEASE, someone validate my assertions here!!!  (Just read that the widely spread rumor that The Stones were considered as the droogs in A Clockwork Orange was a wiley bit of publicity spread by Andrew Loog "The Droog" Oldham. And I SO wanted to go on believing in that one)

Having only seen the Raro version of Holy Mountain, I must say that this new version looks fantastic:

Below is copied from IMDb, this would have been a very cool film!

"In 1975 he returned to France to begin work on a film that was never made: a colossal adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune", which was to star Orson Welles, Salvador Dali and others, was to be scored by Pink Floyd, and which brought together the visionary talents of H.R. Giger, Dan O'Bannon, and Jean "Moebius" Giraud (Giger and O'Bannon later collaborated on "Alien.") The project's financiers backed out, and "Dune" was eventually filmed by David Lynch."

Got this boxset yesterday at Fry's for $9.99. It was SUPPOSED to be $39.99, but was tagged at $9.99... SCORE!!!  Weird thing, the piece I wanted most is the Holy Mountain DVD, which now I can't find!!!

Don't cue the parade yet! It's ALL at a price: disappearing DVD, car accident, shortening of weekend, & my girlfriend is incommunicado (& a bit upset with me), plus living on a completely different continent!!!
