Lasse Hallstrom has some good "family" films: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat and An Unfinshed Life

father/daughter(s): look no further than Eat Drink Man Woman by Ang Lee and The Ice Storm has good family aspects too

A single mother in action: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore by Martin Scorcese.

and an amazing "family" film and one of the best in the last five years: In America

and finally brother/brother & father/long lost son - Paris, Texas

I recommend a little unknown gem starring William Hurt called Second Best (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111102/). It's not available on DVD, but I did manage to get an XviD from an Italian DVD source (really strange), and I'll gladly upload it somewhere for all interested.

Oh, I have seen Paper Moon, it's fantastic! :D

Rebel without a cause & East of Eden is 2 great films James Dean starred in.

I was going to say Carrie! Of course! Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek make the ultimate mother and daughter from hell lmao.

ooh! And of course my favourite (aside from FWWM which is also a family/father daugher film of sorts) is Thirteen. Excellent. go out and watch it if you haven't already, though i'm sure everyone has by now, I've only been ranting on about it for about the last three years! heh

have ya checked out 'night mother with sissy spacek & ann bancroft?  how about in the bedroom? very tear jerking films, get a box of kleenex's sissy spacek is one heck of a great actress, along with others in the 2 films here.
