...the coveted first place goes to... MIAMI! Sadly, Los Angeles only made number 4. See what you think. Does this ring true? Remember that at any given point, OneSuaveFolk is behind the wheel in mellow Seattle. Pittsburgh is courteous? Who has a car there? Or New York? It's mostly cabs, right? Well, for what it's worth, the rude-courteous driver survey results. | | | Survey: Miami worst for road rage | | | May 15 12:17 PM US/Eastern
| | NORWALK, Conn., May 15 (UPI) -- A survey commissioned by AutoVantage of Norwalk, Conn., finds Miami is the worst city in the United States for road rage.
Behind Miami in the survey -- which involved 2,521 people and was conducted over the phone between Jan. 16 and March 23 -- were New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Washington. The ranking marked the second time for Miami in the top spot and the first year Washington made the top five.
The city with the most courteous drives, according to survey respondents, was Portland, Ore., followed by Pittsburgh, Seattle/Tacoma, St. Louis and Dallas/Ft. Worth.
"Road rage has unfortunately too often become a way of life, both on and off the track," said AutoVantage spokesperson Liz Allison. "More and more, in cities across America, people are acting out their frustrations with dangerous results. It's bad for professional and everyday drivers alike."

It's just a little embarrassing, don't you think? I mean, we have an automobile culture. We've got the roads and the cars and the congestion. We've got pent up and frustrated people by the millions. It just seems to me that we deserve at least a number 2 standing. And falling so far behind a backwater town like MIAMI!? That is sad, my friend. Surprising and sad. In fact, I'm inclined to believe the survey was fixed. Susan

No, my stance is that being no. 4 should be one more reason to "love" L.A. Love grows the lower it gets.

I suppose you're right. Every cloud having its silver lining and all. Maybe this is a good thing. Miami, though?! How could that be? I lived there many years ago but I guess things have changed. Tough cops there too. I was once pulled over for having dilated pupils. That and the burnt out license plate light in the rear.

Hahaha, nope, Booth. I am a virtual Buddha when behind the wheel. Driving here is a full time occupation. You know whenever you head out on the road that you're likely to be spending an hour or so getting to your destination just because of the other cars on the road -- not because of the distance. So, I settle back, turn on the AC and the radio, put a cold Perrier in the cup holder and a fully charged cell phone in the center console, then I'm off in my self-contained pleasure machine. So to speak. I love the scenery. I'll get off the freeway in a heartbeat if it looks bad. There's always Mulholland and the canyons with plenty of sightseeing opportunities. I stay in one designated lane whenever possible. I go the speed limit or 5 miles over. No more. If the traffic is moving slowly and I'm stuck on the freeway, I go into a private zone of relaxation. Very rarely does another car ruffle me. I always defer to cars who are trying to enter the traffic flow. Don't rush to grab parking spots. Don't panic if one I intended is taken by someone else. I'll just get another. If I'm behind a bad driver, I wait patiently for the chance to escape. I wouldn't dream of honking or giving a hand sign. I figure at any given time it could be the equivalent of my mother driving or my father-in-law when he was alive or my son when he was first learning to drive, or someone who's lost. The trick is to allow plenty of time and then just relax and you'll eventually arrive at your destination. Freak out at every annoying driver around you, honk, scream, and gesture, you'll still probably arrive at the same time. There's probably very little that can be done in the way of driving that could cause me to lose my temper. Susan

Or we could offer our services to drivers training classes.

Susan | Boy, those LA cops are good!! How could they tell you had dilated pupils BEFORE you were stopped?! They must've been plenty dilated, like an anime character maybe?

I honked at a guy last year who cut me off. He literally accelerated up and jammed his car in where no car could fit. Only by jamming my brakes on did I avoid hitting him. So I gave him a quick toot so he could be aware what a stupid move it was. So what does he do? Drives forward a little bit and then nails his brakes. Fine - I have good reflexes and brakes. We go around a corner and the single lane splits into 2. I've recognised this guy as a road hazard and plan to get away from his general area. So I put my foot down and go past. Just as I'm 90% past him, I think he's gotten a little peeved that he's about to be left eating dust, so he does the logical thing and turns sharply into my car. Kinda like the police chase manoevre - sent my car spinning around a couple of times, off the road, and left facing upwards on the freeway embankment resting against a small tree. Because I dared to give him a quick honk of the horn for being a grade-A dickhead. Anyway, you atheists may be sceptical about the power of christianity...but had I not been a christian, there is 100% chance I would've smashed this guy to within an inch of his life. But I remained calm, and told him he'd better back away, or I'd class his approach to me as provocation and unleash. The gritted teeth, pulsing veins and flying spittle probably gave him a clue that I meant it. Anyway, car's fixed now, and life goes on. Would I honk the horn next time? Probably. I use my horn about 1-2 times a year...only when someone really needs to be told to get a clue. Otherwise, I really enjoy driving, in my own A-type sorta way. In terms of the US, the worst drivers I saw during my 2 years there were in Hawaii - some real risk-takers over there...

I drive defensively. The days of yelling or flipping the bird at a poor driver are long over. No longer is the worst case reaction a fist fight. Now, you don't know what ahole will pull a firearm and use it. Let the offensive driver go. I stay calm and figure the offensive driver doesn't know me and therefor it is nothing personal. Discretion is the better part of valor.
