I was going to put Iron Butterfly...only because it is one of the many U.P traditions this one being on the road trip up. In-A-Gadda-Da Vida is a staple when we reach the last state route that puts us setting out controls for the heart of the UP

I used to admire all the long Pink Floyd ones, Shine On, Dogs and Sheep, Echoes. But somehow I am finding more beauty in their more modest songs now. Not that I have anything against Echoes, it remains a masterpiece. No one mentioned Dire Straits's Telegraph Road (slightly over 14 minutes). That's sheer beauty! Not surprisingly, the least interesting here are the sung parts, I like Mark's murmuring but he is far from the greatest singer ever ;-) However, the instrumental bits are wonderful! Especially the piano theme which later is taken over by guitar, I am not able to tell you the exact time of it but I'm sure you know which one I mean? After that the vocal parts come back once again. | QUOTE: LED ZEP - Achilles Last Stand 10:22 LED ZEP - In my Time of Dying 11:04 |
both songs are alright but I have an impression Led Zeps were better off with the songs which lasted just below ten minutes: Since, Dazed and Confused, Stairway...
The longest ones tend to be boring at times.

let me digress for a moment to expand upon BOB1's Pink Floyd statement to mention some of their "modest" songs and list some of these I particularly like. 1. "San Tropez" - remains one of my all time favorite Floyd tracks 2. just about anything off of Obscurred By Clouds, which doesn't get enough much notice because it came in between Meddle and Dark Side..."Burning Bridges", "The Gold It's in the..." - a great track featuring Gilmour jamming at his best, "Wot's...uh the deal", found a recent live performance of this by Gilmour and Wright, "Childhood's End" and "Stay are both great... 3. "On The Turning Away" - this is a wonderful piece of work 4. "If", "Summer of '69" and "Fat Old Sun" from Atom Heart Mother

Mouse on Mars - One Day, Not Today 11:20 It's actually one song split into 12 tracks, for no apparent reason, some as short as 5 seconds, which is interesting in shuffle mode.
