Or so it seems!  Way to go, Canada!  Let's hope this is the medical advance it appears to be from this brief Globe and Mail article.

Canadian team discovers gene that turns cancers off

VANCOUVER

A unique gene that can stop cancerous cells from multiplying into tumours has been discovered by a team of scientists at the B.C. Cancer Agency in Vancouver.

The team, led by Dr. Poul Sorensen, says the gene has the power to suppress the growth of human tumours in multiple cancers, including breast, lung and liver.

The gene, HACE 1, helps cells fight off stress that, left unchecked, opens the door to formation of multiple tumours.

Dr. Sorensen's team found cancerous cells form tumours when HACE 1 is inactive, but when additional stress such as radiation is added, tumour growth is rampant.

Kick-starting HACE 1 prevented those cells from forming tumours.

The study appears in the advance online publication of Nature Medicine.

Bring it on.  Beating cancer, or I guess just being able to arrest tumours would seem to me to be THE biggie in terms of advances.  Not even just medical advances, just advances, full stop.  I believe the statistic I heard quoted recently was that it takes 1 in 3 people.  Lord knows I've got every chance of being one of them.  Maybe we are fortunate to live in these times after all?

Amen to that Hero. That is the most significant breakthrough I remember hearing on cancer. Congrats to the Canadians.

What are we going to do without cancer?  I'd much rather due of cancer by 80 than die insane with no bowel control at 100+

You say that now.

If you get too bored of not dying, or a bit concerned that you might madly shit everywhere, I suppose you can always throw yourself into a river.

Or if you're really lucky you'll get bowel cancer which leads to no control and possibly some neurological paraneoplastic syndromes.

That's everyone's preferred option, obviously.  I didn't want to raise hopes too high.

Yes, odds are you'll only get a tumor or two, a couple metastases...
The aforementioned is like a Royal Flush. You'd have to be really lucky to get it.
