Johnny Depp Enters Dark Shadows
Source: Variety

Warner Bros. is teaming with Johnny Depp's Infinitum-Nihil and Graham King's GK Films to develop a feature based on the '60s supernatural TV show "Dark Shadows."

According to Variety, Depp has always been obsessed with "Dark Shadows" and had, as a child, wanted to be Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series. The role was originated by Jonathan Frid.

Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies.

Oh my god. Can I please be sick of Johnny Depp already?

Trailer for Tim Brton's Sweeney Todd.  Yes, there is singing.

Sweeney Todd looks incredible. I am a little worried about the singing though, since Johnny Depp and HBC didn't have fantastic voices in Corpse Bride, and the rest of the cast isn't professional either. From the preview it looks like the old Tim Burton has come back, as Corpse Bride indicated. I think he'd lost a little of his edginess in recent years, but this looks like a classic. Let's just hope the movie lives up to the trailer...

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Unless I'm missing the sarcasm, I find it funny that people can see the same thing and have such opposing views of it.
I think it looks terrible. He peaked with Ed Wood.

Hmm... I think that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of Depp's weakest performances. It was just weird and creepy; much closer to Michael Jackson than Willy Wonka. I thought that was going to be a great movie, but the whole thing was off, nothing was quite like it should have been. Bad special effects too. Thank god he released Corpse Bride the same year, which more than made up for it. I think that he's an excellent actor though. And yes, I actually am really excited about Sweeney Todd, I wasn't being sarcastic. I've been a huge Burton fan since I was 8 or 9, so I always look forward to anything he releases (even after the trio of disappointing films: "Planet of the Apes, "Big Fish", and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". The R rating is also a plus for me; Burton seems to have gone kind of soft ever since Batman Returns, and his cruel and wicked sense of humor has been kind of toned down, except for Sleepy Hollow. This film looks like it could bring back the edgy, almost cruel side of the director in his earlier days, in films like Beetlejuice and Batman, which is exactly what this kind of story needs. I think Johnny Depp's one of the best actors today, even if he isn't really stretching his boundaries right now; it's been a while since he made a film that wasn't "Pirates" or Tim Burton. I'm slightly more relaxed about the musical numbers now that I've heard that Sondheim auditioned the actors himself. However, I also heard that Depp didn't actually sing in Corpse Bride though, so if he's not even as good as the guy who dubbed him...

With the exceptions of the "pretty good" From Hell, Blow and Once Upon a Time in Mexico nothing could have redeemed Depp in my eyes after Man Who Cried and Chocolat. I endured Pirates I, but skipped everything else but The Libertine (for Wilmot's story, not Depp.)  Dude is just hard to avoid these days.

Likewise, I gave up on Burton with Planet of the Apes.

Gah!  How did Sweeney Todd end up in my Netflix queue and why in God's name did I watch it?!

It could have been a decently spooky/queer movie as a non-musical.  At least you could mute Cry Baby and still enjoy the view.

I liked Sweeney Todd. The singing sometimes got annoying (Joanna), but overall the story was good (although I understand it was the same as the Sondheim musical) and it was fun enough.

I like Depp aswell, although the Pirates films got very boring very quickly.

And I'm looking forward to Burton's Alice In Wonderland. I like all of Burton's films. It's just that a lot of them (Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Planet of the Apes) don't really stand up to rewatching. Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood are far and away the best.

Fec, where can I pick up the Dark Shadows box set? (1200+ episodes, 5 per disk, what 240 discs?)

I remember it was one of the few things I was forbiden to watch when I was a kid so naturally the first chance I got on it went.  My reaction, predictably enough, was 'what's the big deal?'  Wonder if I'd have a different opinion now.

I almost spit my Coke Zero out everytime I read one of your posts, redbear.

Glad you are a member here.

Johnny Depp is an awesome actor, but he has become ridiculously overexposed and needs to go back to making small independent edgy films.

I wasn't into Sweeney Todd.  The genre mix just did not work for me.  I liked the way the film looked though.  I didn't like the Dark Shadows series, so to me anything they do with it would be an improvement.  It may have been edgy at the time it came out, but I was bored when I watched it.

No spit takes on the hardware please.

Wait, am I in the right thread?
