Deadboy and the Elephantmen
By the time they released their first album on a label that could get their music "out there", anything good about the music was gone.
They went from this To this

I love their single "Straight Lines" as a standalone song...but in perspective as a Silverchair song? I was a bit disappointed by it and the album. Oh well. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say The Eagles. OK, so their new CD isn't bad, per se. But. After not having made an album in almost 30 years...it was really disappointing to hear them sound exactly the same as before. I could have saved a few bucks and listened to their Greatest Hits albums. I was hoping for a bit of perspective and maturing of their musical chops...oh well.

Daryl Hall and John Oates spent the 70s and 80s putting out fifteen or sixteen interesting, fairly risk-taking rock and pop music albums. In the 90s they released two listenable if uninventive "adult contemporary" albums. Last year they did a Christmas album.

REM lost their drummer and went electronica. The resulting three albums are very listenable, but compare them to the three that preceeded them and tell me they're still at the top of their game. Not continually downhill, but plateaued, like recent Simpsons episodes.

Most bands nowadays don't last long enough to ask this question. Two CD's and back to the bars and county fairs.

The last Rob Zombie CD was quite sad. Only one really stong track. Michelle and I went to his show in Salem, Oregon and it was obvious the crowd just wasn't into the new stuff. Long live Thunder Kiss '65

The sight of your avatar stacked three deep kind of blew my mind, Staring Man. Consider editing one post to add thoughts, rather than posting several times in a row. Contrary to what one might have guessed from my earlier post, I'd still kill to see REM live.

What about U2? For some reason they're still really popular, but the only strong song they've released since the "Pop" album was "City of Blinding Lights", and that doesn't hold a candle to any of the first 6 tracks on "Pop". As for REM, they become unlistenable (to me) long ago. Also I wanted to mention one band that's better than they've ever been: Radiohead. "In Rainbows" is an incredible album! I'm really obsessed with it right now...
That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

In relation to my previous post, I'll hijack this thread for one post, just to say I like Dax Riggs' voice. Here's a cover version of Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man

I saw U2 on the "Unforgettable Fire" and "Joshua Tree" tours. The music and emotion was so incredible. Then they took this weird musical detour starting with "Achtung Baby". They became such a disappoint to me since. Another Band that hit the skids was RUSH. So awesome until the early nineties. What happen????

I was going to say U2 but I knew someone was going to bring them up...to me their musical decline started with the self-indulgent Rattle N' Hum...they bounced back with Achtung, Baby, which was their last good CD, everything since then, blah blah... As for R.E.M I stiil like them as much as I ever have...I survived Up, which I actually listened to the other day, and waited for them to get over Bill Berry's departure, which was readily apparent on Up. I really liked Reveal...it's not Lifes Rich Pageant or New Adventures in H-Fi, but I thought it had several very strong songs, there were 3 or 4 weak ones, which many of their earlier works did not have, but those strong tracks made the album worth owning. Around The Sun...mellow, a post-modern Automatic For The People (and no I am not comparing it to one of their greatest CDs, it sounds like I am but I'm really not). Reveal was better, but I enjoyed the overall feel they were going for on Sun..."Wanderlust" sounds like an old REM groove and "Aftermath" had a nice nostalgic ring to it too. You knew there comments were coming since I am likely the biggest REM fan on here and I have NEVER been disappointed by one of their shows and I have been to a bunch and looking forward to the new tour when the new CD comes out. Okay, my pick is Tears for Fears, the last CD they did with Curt Smith rejoining was horrible. Roland Orzabal had a very good band surrounding him and did two CDs post-Curt, Elemental which was decent and Raoul and the Kings of Spain, which I thought was terrific with a very good diversity of styles while still sounding like TFF. The new Radiohead CD is very good, I have been listening to it a lot too!!

Have you all gone stark raving mad?!?!??? U2 are as strong as they've ever been...Vertigo ring any bells? Somtimes you can't make it on your own? Beautiful Day? Elevation? Seriously - these guys just don't know how to do bad music. As for the Chair, their single Straight Lines is an instant classic and recently received the Australian Song of the Year award at the ARIAS (our Grammy's). Silverchair have never produced CDs where the quality runs throughout imho, but their hits are pure gold and that continues till today. REM are a band where you need to buy the CD that suits your musical tastes. Whether you like their early days gear with folkish themes, their hard rock on Monster, or their more recent electronica on Up, you need to choose their era that suits you and the relative CD. I still rate U2 and Silverchair very highly. REM are good, but do seem to be showing a shallowness and repetitiveness in more recent offerings. Stipe can't just wail nonsense into a mic anymore (while a keyboard warbles on in the background) and get away with it - people are wanting more. As for groups that don't sound as good anymore, they usually fade away...

Surprisingly that would have been my exact quote except substitute "Bono" for "Stipe" and "guitar" for "keyboard".
I've seen REM about 5 times and thoroughly enjoyed every concert. My vote on this thread goes to Pearl Jam followed closely by U2, they just aren't as good anymore imo.

Nope. They jumped the shark about halfway through Unforgettable Fire. (You folks may continue to enjoy their pretentious caterwauling, though. ) Just my tuppence.

Easy on the Pearl Jam shots...... I will admit that Binaural and Riot Act sucked big time but the last CD was friggin awesome and the tour was simply WOW!!! Still one the best live shows you will ever witness.

I totally agree with what the most of you said about U2 and R.E.M. U2 died with "The Joshua Tree", their last good album. Nowadays they are clever but commercial enough to make me yawn. R.E.M. died after "GREEN" with the ugly "OUT OF TIME". Even the cover art was terrible in that album. I'd save just a few songs, "losing my religion" of course and maybe "Texarcana" and the acoustic ballads... But that's not the worst: "Automatic for the people" even in its title sounds like a commercial product to be sold in the supermarkets...As it happened. They lost their energy, their peculiar sound. "Up" is just the final epitafh for this group. The best R.E.M. are all in the indie period...Think about "Chronic town", "Fables of the Recostruction", "Document"! Please be honest and say that nowadays they are only a bluff.... I was a great old fan of them. What a pity. Sonia

The Joshua Tree was such an incredible album there had to be a downside. The downside was everthing afterwards was crap.

I've seen REM about 5 times and thoroughly enjoyed every concert. |
I got to see REM in a small club in Wildwood, NJ in the early 80s. I was so excited before the show.
To this day, it ranks as the worst concert I have ever seen. They couldn't even stir up enough enthusiam for the audience to ask for a single encore. I guess everyone has an off night.

I agree that "Tattoo You" was a fantastic album and the Stones have never been able to come since. Up to that point the Stones had a Midas touch in the recording studio. Makes you wonder what happen, Did the drugs finally kick in?
