well, Kirk, there is my new Northern Ohio buddy. He seems to be making up for all the Neadrathals. The last two films I loaned him were Night of the Iguana and The Motorcycle Diaries, so that covers films before he was born/ B &  W and subtitled films...you should read my blog, the only one that is not a novel excerpt, you might find it amusing.

another movie that would be roundly rejected by people at work except for the Tasteful Triumvirate (Luis, Chris and Casey) is Me, You and Everyone We Know...it just wouldn't fly, I have a strong feeling

I LOVED that movie, Smokey!  And Miranda July.  Oh, and John Hawkes.  Fantastically satisfying.

HURLYBURLY... I thought it was a great film, excellent dialogues, superb performances, I've seen it several times and I love it, love Penn, Spacey, Palminteri, Penn's cocaine driven monologues, Anna Paquin's character's appearance at the end, etc. I went to see it with a group of friends and everyone loathe it except me, I keep reading bad reviews everywhere; well, I think it qualifies...

One of my favourite movies is Nothing but trouble. I don't know how many times i've watched it. Great entertainment. I really, really like it. It's written and directed by a fella named Dan Aykroyd.

It's a strange, funny and scary movie. Sometimes it is like those dreams where you try to escape from the monster but you can't, and the monster is not so scary that you wake up but its just bugging the hell out of you.

Borat

Not that everyone hated it, but it seemed many people just didn't really like it that much.  Many curiously were lukewarm about it - which makes me think they just didn't get much of it.

For me though it was 10/10 hilarious.  I laughed so hard I was literally aching halfway through.  The ability to make so much social/political commentary through such an obnoxious character's interaction with unsuspecting victims was just gold.

All Wes Anderson's films with the exception of The Royal Tenenbaums. Not a big fan of that one. All my friends tend to dislike Anderson's films and I can kind of understand why. He tries to be too hip, I suppose. I've always gravitated more towards his themes and story elements than his distinctive style.

I guess there's something to be said for looking beyond what's on the surface. But then again, I'm certainly perceived as a hipster, which I can attest, is not the case at all.

Good to see you back by the way

Good call, Req. but reverse it for me. Everyone hates the Tenenbaums but me, but I do agree with you that it is my least favorite Anderson film,

Fixed for me. Borat works in small doses, such as his appearances on the Ali G show. The movie had many of the same skits that had already been made and a whole lot of lame narrative.
So yeah, the movie is inferior.

The funniest Borat bit for me remains this:

Talking about the third in a series.... One of my favorite movies is Poltergeist 3. That actor who plays Donna is in it(what was her name again?). I like that movie. And its even evil doppelgangers in it! And spirits in the mirrors.

For sheer camp and nostalgic value, the Friday the 13th films and Roadhouse.

Since there seems to be a major disappointment in M. Night Shyamalan's new picture The Happening (and for that matter, a general disappointment in basically every movie he's directed after The Sixth sense), I'd like to express my appreciation for his works, which may seem stupid but are something else actually.

I like all these movies!

I love Borat, and The Royal Tenenbaums. Not so much a fan of The Life Aquatic, although I liked the individual characters. Maybe now that I've seen Tenenbaums I may watch it again. Also, I obv. like FWWM. And Shyamalan is one of my favourite directors. Unbreakable is his best film IMO, but  also really like The Sixth Sense and Signs. The Village was okay, although the twist ruined it for me. It just took credibility away from the main story, which had some good acting. I liked Joaquin Phoenix in it. Lady in the Water was really poor and apparently The Happening is even worse. He's getting worse and worse with age. Turn it around Night!

Love that movie! It still gives me the creeps when I see it.  Then I have that song, "Did you ever hear a dream...walking...well I did..." in my head.  Which is also creepy.

I also...and yes, I am going to admit it...find parts of Howard the Duck just hilarious.

Am also very fond of the old Jim Carrey movie, Once Bitten.

That 'apparently' gives me the feeling that you have not seen this film, so why even criticize it? Just because everyone in the states hated it? That's not really mature, you're just going with the flow.

Yet, maybe I'm wrong and saying 'apparently' for you means something else. In that case, please inform me of your ideas in a better way. Otherwise, please watch the film before criticizing it. It's a very metaphorical film, it's really filled with absurdities, so if you're just looking for movies that make sense for the average audience, go catch a Hulk or The Love Guru!

How perceptive of you. Yes, that 'apparently' means I haven't seen it. Otherwise I would have just said I liked/disliked it. If I haven't seen a film, then I go partly on a mixture of reviews from critics/friends. When the hell did I say I haven't seen it because I want to watch the Hulk/Love Guru?! Besides, I hardly think The Happening is a very high-brow film. Yes compared to the Love Guru, but not compared to most of the films I usually see. I'll probably see the Happening when it comes out on DVD. I'm not spending money to go see it when everyone has told me it's appallling, and I was already massively disappointed with Shyamalan's last film. Of course, many people didn't like Unbreakable so I still hold some hopes that I will like it.

It just seems to be the immediate response from some people on this board. Oh, they're criticising a film that I like so I'm gonna tell them that it is because they are too stupid to understand it and recommend a crappy action movie. That is not really mature.

I like The New Republic's review:

"M. Night Shyamalan's latest movie, The Happening, is not merely bad. It is an astonishment, so idiotic in conception and inept in execution that, after seeing it, one almost wonders whether it was real or imagined."

That's a twist that's too good for Shyamalan: you never actually saw the film, it was all in your head.

Roger Ebert actually gave it 3 out of 4 stars. I think he has been getting soft recently though. All of the other reviews I've seen have been massively critical.

One Norwegian newspaper actually called it "intelligent". All the others panned it, though. "Intelligent" I refuse to believe. None of his other movies have been. "The Village" showed some promise, but ultimately it fell flat.
