there are a number of songs/symphonies which cause me to tear up.

i well remember watching/listening to Ishtak perlman playing the theme to Schindler's List on public tv and feeling so moved by it that i'd wept for a half hour afterward.

other pieces:

barber's 'adagio for strings'

'the swan' by sant seins [spelling?]

ave maria

'st swithins' day' by billy bragg

0, holy night

the gentle african music which played during the very poigant scene in ' the color purple' in which the character played by whoopie goldberg meets her african family

the old african american spiritual, 'going home'

and, last but NOT least, julee cruise's song [have forgeotten its title] which was played during the scene at the roadhouse when the giant says to agent cooper 'it's happening AGAIN'. what a lush, poignant melody with such pathos.

it's pileated, isn't it?

"The World Spins". :) I remember when she sang that live at the '02 fest, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. It never made me cry all that much really (I would get "misty-eyed" but nothing more), until this past summer when my best friend's mom passed away suddenly, and on my bff's MySpace page she had that song playing for several weeks afterwards. It was really heartbreaking in a whole new way.

For the longest time (and this is mortifying to admit), the song "The Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas made me choke up. Which I always found weird because I hate Pocahontas.

Hands down, Barber's Adadio for Strings. I'm not talking, misty-eyed tearing. I mean full-blown big tears down the face crying.

Hurt by Johnny Cash. The first time I heard it was also my first time seeing the video. Good Lord I cried so much; it was full-on sobbing, snot bubbles and all. I don't know if it was the song so much as seeing and hearing a man who knew death was imminent.

My theory by A. Elk, brackets, Miss, brackets. This theory goes as follows and begins now. All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end. That is my theory, it is mine, and it belongs to me, and I own it, and what it is, too.

Being a "man", I don't "cry". I had my tear ducts sliced off at birth, the same time as when the doc lopped off my foreskin. Yeah, buddy!!!  There are a number of songs that give me a lump in the throat (eg. the intro to Freebird. "Ronnie, WHYYY?!?!"  And since it's about Duane Allman: "Duane, WHYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!").   Are these reactions to the music solely, or are there more personal associations? ("This is the song that was playing when he said we were through!")     There's a very entertaining book I just read called : I Hate Myself & I Want To Die: The 52 Most Depressing Songs Ever Recorded. You'll laugh--- until you cry!  #1 is a tune I've never even heard, a piece of holiday hokum called The Christmas Shoes. Anybody hear it?

Oh yeah...Christmas Shoes is a tear-jerker, alright. Has a book and a movie based on the song.

Never heard "Christmas Shoe"

But I too have no tear ducts so Deanne says I'm a robot.

The only song that comes close for me is "Black" by Pearl Jam.  Eddie's vocals are very haunting indeed.

Ooh, good call. I have to chime in on this one. this is one song that really gets me bummed out and chokes me up from time to time. It went from being this angry-sad emo "I should just die because nobody loves me" song to this sad lament from an old man reflecting on his life. It's a song that I end up feeling really deep in my soul, for lack of better description.

amanda, i know what you mean. while i've never heard this song, there is a song which the 'teacup' in 'beauty and the beast' sings which really gets me going.

geez.

regarding 'freebird'  a punk friend and i always used to laugh at the song and parody it whilst thrusting our hands, using the satanic sign, in the air.

Beautifully put, as ever i have never heard the original version but I am assured I have no need to. And the bit that really gets me with the Johnny Cash version is right near the end where the music swells. *bottom lip wobbles*

Dance of the Hours makes me cry too, but in a "bloody hell that's fantastic" sort of way.

The Flesh Failures/Let the sunshine in from the Hair soundtrack made me a bit teary eyed the last time I listened to it. Stupid hippies.

It's Camille Saint-Saens & my fave version of The Swan is Clara Rockmore's theremin version.  Most modern music makes me cry--- because it's such crap!!! No, really...

Kenji Kawaii. The grand concert from 'Avalon'. The street sequence of 'Ghost in the Shell'.
