Okay, so today was the Italian premiere for Paranoid Park by Gus Van Sant. Having seen most of GVS' s best movies (Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For, Elephant and Last Days), of course I went to check his new film out and as expected I was immediately mesmerized by it.

I totally understand his way of movie-making, especially the newer one, and thought that such a mature director as him couldn't be more fresh and involved with these young non-actors than anyone else. With every movie he makes once in a while, he's becoming even more regenerated. I think it's a very rare and admirable thing for an american film-maker to produce a work in such liberty and non-constriction.

Of course, I don't make comparisons with Lynch, but I believe Van Sant managed to be quite original, hypnotic and, most of all, experimental although the means are basically the traditional ones (he shoots most of the time on regular 35 mm).... That's one way of saying I'm always hoping for Lynch to go back to film sometimes (not that I don't like the DV look of INLAND EMPIRE)

My favorite scenes were of course the shower sequence with the distortion of the water noises and the part where the otherwise cheesy dialogue by the girlfriend was overlapped with Nino Rota's soundtrack from Fellini's Amarcord. Everything for me in these last three movies was remarkable and I don't care about the winnings at film festivals or the way most of the critics blame him for bringing up difficult issues such as juvenile disbandment and eventual crimes. The way this director communicates simultaneously with the young players and the audience is truly a genuine method of telling real-world stories in a quite unrealistic movie style
