Ike Turner, a maverick pioneer of rock 'n' roll, rhythm & blues & soul music has passed away at age 76. Unfortunately, most people will forget or ignore his legacy & remember him as the man who went cocaine crazy & abused his ex-partner Tina Turner (Anna Mae Bullock). He's known to have done what's considered the first rock 'n' roll song Rocket 88 (vocals by Jackie Brenston) in 1951. His piano & crazy whammy bar guitar are galvanizing. Check out his 1950s pre-Tina recordings or his 2001 comeback Here & Now, way better than anything Tina has done  for eons.  I'm certainly no champion of spousal abuse, but Tina owes her career to Ike & after years of floundering in the '70s, she finally got her big break by finding the right producers &  pushing her image as "the survivor". Talk about lemons into lemonade.  The Ike & Tina Turner revue was musical dynamite, as much so for Ike as his frontwoman. Too bad they never reconciled.    Ike, I'll miss you, brother.

Poor dead Ike. His situation reminds me of the joke whose punchline is "But ya screw ONE sheep!!! "

Yeah Suave, Ike was generally credited with that "Rocket 88" as the first R n R record.

So you seperate the artist from the personal life, I guess.

Oh, how even handed of me.

So, it's down to THIS, huh? What, is Hitler too "old school", or is Pol Pot just funnier?  No, I don't necessarily separate the artist from the personal life, but some questionable behavior does NOT negate someone's artistic merit.  People have lionized musicians like Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, James Brown (the list goes on), who certainly have indulged in similar behavior. But they were lucky enough to not cross someone as vindictive as Anna Mae Bullock.  She managed to turn herself into a martyred saint & Ike into a handy scapegoated  demon.   She referred to his bluesy style as "sad sack music", aligning herself with the happier white imitators, who helped her achieve wild acclaim. And she claims to be an enlightened Buddhist. "Nom myo ryenge kyo" my ass. Wouldn't part of that philosophy include perspective & forgiveness?    After she refused to comment on the passing of the man who gave her her name & fame, many of her fans defended her by saying: "She's a class act. She owes him nothing. I hope Ike is rotting in hell."       That's pretty screwed up. Tina didn't deserve the way their marriage ended, but Ike doesn't deserve to be exiled & reviled & compared to a mass murdering fascist like Pol Pot.    Are any of you even aware of Ike's oeuvre? Or are you all too young &/or white?  Honky, please...

Too late, we're off!

Anyway, I like Floyd Red Crow Westerman, and he also died.  I'm too lazy to start a thread for it, though, so I'll just say it here.

Suave, I was serious. I think you do have to seperate an artist from their personal life. I seconded your point on " Rockett 88". I really don't know anything about what Tina is up to.

Let's was just having fun taking something to the extreme. No ?.

Tina's "no comment" on Ike's death speaks volumes. Guess she figured she "buried him" with "that movie". She could've been graceful & said something kind AND appropriate... And I know the Pol Pot line was a joke, but name me one celebrity who's been demonized & marginalized like Ike.

I was really only messing Chris, stirring the pot so to speak.  I'd never really heard of the guy until he cashed in his chips. The first thing people mentioned in reports of his death was his knocking around of TT .

In my experience the stigma of hitting one's wife carries a life sentence of shame. And rightly so. The law is usually reluctant to enter into domestic affairs and so the apparent impuntiy of a violent wife-beater carries a degree of laothing first for the act, but that punishment by the law is rarely seen to happen. I have personal experience in this respect.

Do ya think that when Jackson Browne passes, he'll be noted as the guy who "allegedly" smacked Daryl Hannah around?  Yeahhhh, right. Browne is far too, oh, white!!!
