Being a HUGE fan of Twin Peaks, I am a lover of mysteries
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this." -Dale Cooper

I went through a Martha Grimes phase, as a direct result of the roll call in the Pilot, and that was alright as long as it lasted, which was about five books for me. If you can get Mo Hayder's Birdman and her sequel The Treatment, I'd recommend them, as long as you have a strong stomach. (Though their occasional weaknesses seem a little less charming to me now that Hayder has released Pig Island, which is pretty much weakness from front to back.) "Charles Todd" has written a terrific series of Ian Rutledge mysteries. They're modern books, but the setting is post-WWI England. You have to start at the start, though, which is A Test of Wills.

John Sandford is one of my favorites. He has the Prey series (which is the most popular), the Kidd series and then a few miscellanious. They are fast paced and not disappointing. Tami Hoag is okay, it usually takes me a long while to finish one of hers. Lisa Scottoline is great too. I have read most of them. My favorite writer is definitely Bret Easton Ellis, if you are interested in some twisted writings. American Psycho is my favorite but its real gory. I have read three of Dan Brown's books including the DaVInci Code and Deception Point and Digital Fortress are way better, I didn't like DaVinci Code. My grandpa gave me a bunch of books from "new" mystery authors for me to try out. I am hoping they are as good as John Sandford.

Thomas H. Cook has written some very good novels if you're after a mystery writer. I'd recommend The Chatham School Affair (don't be put off by the prissy title) and Places in the Dark. He writes good old-fashioned crime and mystery stories with a dash of psychology. You won't find anything too gruesome a la Kathy Reichs or Patricia Cornwell.

I am frustrated because it seems like the whodunit type mystery is dead. Is my best bet for these type of books to read Agatha Christie?

I am going on a weeklong vacation next week and can't for the life of me find a good mystery/thriller paperback to buy to read on the beach. Does anyone have any current popular fiction mystery authors that keep you guessing, have twists and turns, and a little "spice"? I need to know NOW.

Wolfe wrote 2 Roger Rabbit novels, Who Censored Roger Rabbit (on which the movie is loosely based) & Who P-p-p Plugged Roger Rabbit, which I'm currently reading. Funny, twisty, spicey, you'll not find mysteries like this anywhere else on the shelf. MUCH darker, very noir than the film. Take a chance...

The 2007 Agatha Award (for whodunit type mystery) went to Louise Penny for A Fatal Grace. Other authors very popular in this genre are Sara Paretsky, Sue Grafton, Martha Grimes. Happy reading!

I may try that Louise Penny book - isn't that type of book called a "cozy"? Sounds like a good choice for this time of year.

I wonder if the small town in the Louise Penny book that is named Three Pines is an ode to Twin Peaks. It's gotta be.

Dorothy Sayers, author of the Lord Peter Wimsey series of mysteries. IMO one of the best, most readable best mystery writers of all time. Of course Agatha Christie, although I have to say that she did write a few mystery books that were real clunkers, and some that were only average. "Ten Little Indians" is a classic; "Murder on the Blue Train" and "Murder on the Orient Express," "The Mysterious Affair at Styles," "Murder on the Links," "Curtain," "Sleeping Murder," many other very good mysteries. I can only say one thing that best mystery writers goes to Dorothy Sayers, because he made me horrified by her stories. Best Mystery Writers
