Do you find yourself always attracted to David Lynch's lead girls in his more recent movies and then find them very unattractive in other roles?  Examples:

1. I never thought Laura Dern was attractive at all, even in Blue Velvet, but for some reason I found her very attractive in Inland Empire

2. Naomi Watts looked unbelievable in Mulholland Dr. (primarily before they open the blue box) yet I found her very average in other movies I have seen her in.

3. Sherilyn Fenn never looked as good as she did as Audrey Horne.

4. Patricia Arquette was amazing in Lost Highway but I think she is pretty plain as well.

Call me a pervert or dumb or just a stupid fanboy but for some reason I have found these 4 above examples to be very odd as usually a beautiful woman always looks beautiful, but I just recently started thinking about this and was wondering if anyone else felt the same way, that David Lynch knows how to make a woman more beautiful than she normally is through some sort of film magic.

With me, being in love with Jet Girl from the Tank Girl movie and knowing roughly who Naomi Watts was overlapped for at least three years before I figured out they were the same person, so I think I just selected myself out of this one.

I had never seen Tank Girl so maybe I would not have held the same opinion on Naomi Watts had I seen it. I think the only 2 movies I have seen her in other than MD were that new russian mob movie (name escapes me now because I thought it was stupid) and The Ring and The Ring 2 (I believe that was the name of those movies.)

The cinematographer in the season1 commentary said all the women had to be made up, blocked and lit  in the most flattering way possible. But these are just known tricks that depend on budget, not Lynch secrets, though I won't deny he has an eye for looks.

Sherilyn Fenn was just gorgeaus in that period.  She and 21 Jump Street era Johnny Depp must have been adorable together.  I actually think she looks as good if not better in Two Moon Junction, Desire and Hell at the Sunset Motel, and Boxing Helena. I can see if you have a schoolgirl fetish how Audrey would trump them, though. Maybe.

Naomi Watts and Laura Dern are both "cute," but don't do it for me. Dern in WAH: super cute.

Patricia Arquette is flipping hot, and I actually don't think her looks were done justice in LH. Probably to make her look a little rough, like Isabella Rossellini in BV.  She's stand-out attractive in Holy Matrimony, and True Romance.  I've also seen films where they've uglied her up (Human Nature, Little Nicky, the possession scenes in Stigmata) but still.  She can smolder when she needs to.

Madchen Amick is always stunning. Dream Lover and Sleepwalkers come to mind. I need to rent more of her films.

Lara Flynn Boyle has definitely looked better that in TP. But freckles gross me out.

I guess it's all up to your own personal taste and susceptibility to 'movie magic.'  Because even the most beautiful woman can have her off day.

I left these 2 out because I agree they both have either looked better or always look good.  The rest of your views don't agree with mine, so I guess there is something I am getting off of them in particular roles or in certain scenes.  Either way, thanks for replying.

I mostly agree. However, I thought the opposite on your point 1., as I found Laura Dern really attractive in Blue Velvet and WAH but not in INLAND EMPIRE. Obviously, because she is  a lot older. I got the poster free with the DVD and I don't know who's seen it but it's gotta be one of the worst pictures I've ever seen of Laura Dern, it looks like she's balding.

Sherilyn's better with black hair although she does look great in Two Moon Junction.

This may seem a strange question. But watching that Lake Consequence trailer do you ever think when watching a film like that, that why don't you just watch some porn and then watch a proper film   Just a thought, I can't really answer the question because I don't watch that type of film much.

There's a saying "life is too short for soft core."  Then again, it's only porn if it's turning you on.  I genuinely enjoy the artistry of Zalman King.  Can't say it gets me hot and bothered, though.

It's interesting that Sheryl Lee is not often mentioned in these types of discussions. I think she is incredibly beautiful -- even as a dead body.

The question is, Where have you gone?

I agree that David does have a way of capturing the captivating woman in his work.

Sherilyn Fenn looks amazing as Audrey but her beuaty is never caught in other roles. The only one that comes close is her appearance on Friends.

Don't forget Laura Harring. Did you see the "The Punisher"? The movie was horrible but she looked great.

I always felt Laura Dern looked very adorable in Blue Velvet. The blend of burgening adulthood and childlike innocence gave her a very sweet and gentle quality.

Good call on Madchen Amick. I never really thought much of her as Shelly but she has grown very beautifully over the years.

Sheryl Lee - Goddess period

It does appear as if David Lynch must have been concerned with the "beautification" of the actresses within his films. They were all extremely glamorous and provided a contrast for the blatant violence which was occurring simultaneously, and often, toward the women.

I have always found Isabella Rosselini less alluring in Blue Velvet than any other role. I do seem to recall reading that Lynch had, at least for her nude scene, attempted to portray  her as unflatteringly as possible.

They definitely perfected the seductive schoolgirl look via Fenn, except for the TP pilot episode.

Her hair looked nappy. How sad.

She looked smokin' hot in Of Mice and Men, however.

All the actresses you mentioned, are still looking great. Plus, beauty is a subjective matter, so...

Anyway, here my list:

Sheril Lee's best look is in TP and FWWM and that movie about rape of which I unfortunately don't remember the name (its' that one where her new hubby gets distressed when he finds out she doesn't have any pleasure during sex and while they go together on therapy, she relives the trauma of being raped by her father during her childhood and adolescence... which, by the way, is funny if you think of the whole Twin Peaks story).

Madchen Amick - always good

Sherilyn Fenn always looks great. She's gotten a bit bloated with age and pregnancy (I suppose), but I think she's still very gorgeous.

Patricia Arquette is smoking hot and has got an incredible face. With age, she's gotten a bit like Sherilyn Fenn, a little bit too much bloated, considered she's not that tall...

Laura Dern is beautiful in her own special way. Her nose strangely changes between a movie and another, which makes me think she did something to it... I don't know. I saw her in Novocaine and her looks were great, she looked younger than she is and her nose was different... But then you see her in IE and her nose is exactly the same she had in Wild at heart and Blue Velvet, well, maybe a little bit more bony. I think she looked marvelous in Peter Bogdanovich's MASK, which is back in 1985, meaning she was just 18! Before Lynch knew her and if you want my opinion, she didn't seem 18 year old, but even younger. Anyway, she looked incredibly sweet and beautiful.

Naomi Watts didn't look so good in  Assassination of Richard Nixon, in which she had dyed her hair dark brown, I mean the film looked great, but she definitely didn't. She's a natural blonde and she should keep that, no matter what directors and hairstylists tell her. I'm really looking forward to see her in Funny Games U.S. I saw the original austrian movie and it left me speechless, I'm really curious about how Haneke turnedthe tables for the american audience.

Watching Two Girls and a Guy, I was arguing with someone over who was cuter:

Natasha Gregson Wagner (Sheila in LH) or Heather Graham (Annie in TP)?

Did any of you see Laura Flynn Boyle in Law & Order a few weeks ago?  She has had some major botox gone wrong.  Her face has lost all expression and her mouth doesn't close anymore.

To me Botox seems wrong in the first place.
