That's sad, Raymond. Is this a friend of yours? If not, who the heck is Keith Ledger?

Another under thirty bites the dust and I'm thinking my earlier question about sadness at that age is relevant.  Accidental?  Who knows?  Wonder what Owen Wilson thinks.

By the way, I think the crossed wires re/Keith or Heath has to do with Heath being an Aussie who once dated Naomi Watts who is best friends forever with Nicole Kidman who is also an Aussie who is married to Keith Urban, who is also an addict and Australian.  Not that I'm saying Heath was addicted to the pills that killed him.  Or those that didn't kill Owen Wilson.  Or those that did kill Chris Penn along with the cough medicine.  Or those that may have killed Brad Renfro once the autopsy results are released.  Or those that got Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears so wacky.

Lotsa pain going around among the young and privileged.

Here's the NYT story of record on Heath Ledger's death.

Lotsa sadness for everyone involved.  But maybe a postage stamp 50 years down the line?

I never expected that my avatar would become a memorial. Not to mention my eerily prescient sig line. But if his performance is half as good as what we've seen and heard about so far, at least his career went out on a high note.

What a shame this is.  Too young, and too soon.

This was one of the first things someone told me when I got to work yesterday. At first, I didn't believe them (even though I know they wouldn't make something like that up) and was genuinely shocked and saddened. I didn't like Heath Ledger as an actor much at first but he grew on me and I enjoyed his work very much over the past 2-3 years. Very sad indeed.

Not to take this subject of Heath Ledger's death even more OFF TOPIC, I wonder why anyone really cares what a nutcase in Kansas has to say about it???

I mean really.

So what?

If this were the pre-internet days, no one would even know about this group.  As it should be.

His words have as much relevance as the opinion of some nincompoop mumbling to himself on the subway.

Who

Cares

???

Sad, sad, sad.  I really liked his movies (especially A Knight's Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You) and he just seemed a hoot as a person.  Yet another star snuffed out too soon. :(

TMZ wanting to be the first to report that the death may have been from natural causes.  Here's the update:

Heath's Death Could Be Natural Causes

It sounds strange, but sources intimately connected with the Heath Ledger investigation tell TMZ it's possible the actor died of natural causes.

The reason they think that -- it's now appearing that the level of toxicity (from medication) in Ledger's system was low enough that it may not have caused his death. These sources say Heath's heart stopped. It could have been a heart attack but it's not certain, at least not yet. Although it's bizarre that a 28-year-old could die of natural causes, it happens.

We've also learned authorities do not believe the housekeeper heard Ledger snoring when she walked in his bedroom at around 1:00 PM. Sources tell us, a fireman observed rigor mortis in Ledger's jaw shortly after arriving on scene at around 3:30 PM. Sources say they now believe Ledger was dead for around three hours prior to their arrival, so they don't believe the housekeeper could have heard snoring.

Authorities are also annoyed at news reports that there may have been a sinister plot to remove illegal drugs from Ledger's apartment before cops and firemen arrived. There are reports out there that the masseuse called Mary-Kate Olsen and a plot was hatched to have her bodyguard remove certain drugs. Authorities tell us that's impossible, because the cops were there the entire time the bodyguard was present and there would have been no opportunity to carry out such a plan. They say it's a made up story.

As we first reported, the masseuse contacted the bodyguard because she knew he was a licensed EMT.

Maybe it's one of those undetected heart conditions that you hear about with young athletes every now and then.  And if Heath Ledger was really dead when the housekeeper arrived, I'm guessing the masseuse will not have to deal with the lifetime of remorse that would have been the case if he had still been alive while she was setting up her table and calling the bodyguard-EMT instead of 911.

I'm not really interested in dwelling on the circumstances of his death (as long as people get the by-all-accounts inaccurate notion of suicide out of their heads), so it was nice to see these remembrances.

Charisma as Natural as Gravity
by Christopher Nolan

One night, as I'm standing on LaSalle Street in Chicago, trying to line up a shot for "The Dark Knight," a production assistant skateboards into my line of sight. Silently, I curse the moment that Heath first skated onto our set in full character makeup. I'd fretted about the reaction of Batman fans to a skateboarding Joker, but the actual result was a proliferation of skateboards among the younger crew members. If you'd asked those kids why they had chosen to bring their boards to work, they would have answered honestly that they didn't know. That's real charisma—as invisible and natural as gravity. That's what Heath had.

Heath was bursting with creativity. It was in his every gesture. He once told me that he liked to wait between jobs until he was creatively hungry. Until he needed it again. He brought that attitude to our set every day. There aren't many actors who can make you feel ashamed of how often you complain about doing the best job in the world. Heath was one of them.

One time he and another actor were shooting a complex scene. We had two days to shoot it, and at the end of the first day, they'd really found something and Heath was worried that he might not have it if we stopped. He wanted to carry on and finish. It's tough to ask the crew to work late when we all know there's plenty of time to finish the next day. But everyone seemed to understand that Heath had something special and that we had to capture it before it disappeared. Months later, I learned that as Heath left the set that night, he quietly thanked each crew member for working late. Quietly. Not trying to make a point, just grateful for the chance to create that they'd given him.

Those nights on the streets of Chicago were filled with stunts. These can be boring times for an actor, but Heath was fascinated, eagerly accepting our invitation to ride in the camera car as we chased vehicles through movie traffic—not just for the thrill ride, but to be a part of it. Of everything. He'd brought his laptop along in the car, and we had a high-speed screening of two of his works-in-progress: short films he'd made that were exciting and haunting. Their exuberance made me feel jaded and leaden. I've never felt as old as I did watching Heath explore his talents. That night I made him an offer—knowing he wouldn't take me up on it—that he should feel free to come by the set when he had a night off so he could see what we were up to.

When you get into the edit suite after shooting a movie, you feel a responsibility to an actor who has trusted you, and Heath gave us everything. As we started my cut, I would wonder about each take we chose, each trim we made. I would visualize the screening where we'd have to show him the finished film—sitting three or four rows behind him, watching the movements of his head for clues to what he was thinking about what we'd done with all that he'd given us. Now that screening will never be real. I see him every day in my edit suite. I study his face, his voice. And I miss him terribly.

Back on LaSalle Street, I turn to my assistant director and I tell him to clear the skateboarding kid out of my line of sight when I realize—it's Heath, woolly hat pulled low over his eyes, here on his night off to take me up on my offer. I can't help but smile.

Also, Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated his SAG Best Actor award to Ledger. Here's his acceptance speech:

Thank you. I’m very, very proud of this. Thank you so much for giving it to me. And I’m very proud to be included in that group of wonderful actors this year.

You know, for as long as I can remember, the thing that gave me a sense of wonderment, of renewal, the thing that teased me with the question, how is such a thing possible, and then dare you to go back into the arena of one more time, with longing and self-doubt, jostling in the balance. It’s always been the work of other actors, and there are many actors in this room tonight, including my fellow nominees who have given that sense of regeneration and…

Heath Ledger gave it to me. [applause] In “Monster’s Ball,” that character that he created, it seemed to be almost like an unformed being, retreating from themselves, retreating from his father, from his life, even retreating from us, and yet we wanted to follow him, and yet we’re scared to follow him almost. It was unique. And then, of course, in “Brokeback Mountain,” he was unique, he was perfect. [applause] And that scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything that I think I’ve ever seen. And I’d like to dedicate this to Heath Ledger. So, thank you very much. Thank you so much. [applause]

Great publicity for Batman. Loss to the world of film, though. He was really tremendously versatile. Only the good die young, I guess.

I'm really surprised how much people are talking about this- not just in entertainment news, but everywhere.
