It was officially announced yesterday (we knew it was coming) that we can expect a Clone Wars movie in August followed by a TV series that fall season on Cartoon NEtwork! It's a cartoon so that'll be different.

Here's the press release

Trailer looks good.

Seeing as there already was a Clone Wars show made up of five minute or so episodes (totalling about 2 hours in all)... it won't be that different; it just sounds like a continuation of that. That was a cool show though, much better than the first two Star Wars prequels.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Anybody know when the live-action (non-animated) Star Wars tv series is supposed to see the airwaves? I've been hearing occasional news bits about it on scifi.com (Lucas saying he's doing some casting, it's set between ep 3 and 4, and there's rumor of Boba Fett being a part of the plot), but I haven't heard anything lately.

UPDATE: I read this today on cnn.com (http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/03/14/film.starwars.ap/index.html)

Yay! Here come the 501st!

Star Wars creator George Lucas poses in Las Vegas with a pair of clone troopers from his

Fans await return of Star Wars

  • Story Highlights
  • Latest Star Wars film will be made into television series
  • "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," is due in theaters August 15.
  • Movie introduces a female Jedi who is Anakin's young apprentice

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- Fans never seem to get their fill of "Star Wars," and George Lucas is happy to oblige.

Lucas offered a glimpse into the latest creation in his sci-fi universe at the theater-owners convention ShoWest on Thursday, showing a sequence from "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," a computer-animated movie due in theaters August 15. It will be followed by a TV series of the same name, to air on the Cartoon Network and TNT this fall.

The movie came about as an afterthought while Lucas was developing an animated TV show of the same name. That show debuts this fall, but Lucas figured it was ripe for big-screen treatment, too.

"You've got the whole assembly line built, and then you say, 'Hey, we can make up something,"' Lucas said in an interview. "It was like old-time movie making. What I love about television, it's like Monogram Pictures or the old studio system, where a couple guys come to work and they sit and have some coffee and go, 'Why don't we make a movie about such and such? OK, fine.' And at the end of the day, it's pretty much on its way."

Set in the years between episodes II and III -- "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" -- of the big-screen "Star Wars" chronicle, the movie and series present fresh adventures of Jedi warrior Anakin Skywalker, his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other colleagues.

The movie introduces a female Jedi, Ahsoki, who is Anakin's young apprentice.

"It's like 'Band of Brothers' in space, with Jedi," Lucas, 63, said. "You can tell lots of stories. They come up all the time."

Lucas said he plans to produce at least 100 hours worth of TV episodes of "Clone Wars."

He also is moving forward with a live-action "Star Wars" TV show focusing largely on new characters removed from the Skywalker family. That show will be set in the decades between "Revenge of the Sith" and the period when the original film, 1977's "Star Wars," takes place.

So can fans ever get enough of "Star Wars"?

"I don't know," Lucas said. "I'm thankful every year that it keeps going."

The Clone Wars got such awful reviews I had no expectations going into seeing it.  After watching it this weekend, I thought it was decent with cool animation (looked EXACTLY the same as the prequel movies LOL) and understood it was merely a lead-in to kickoff the TV show.  I have only seen one episode of the TV show, but I plan on watching it from here on out.  I think I missed the first 6 episodes.  Anyone else seen the movie or TV show?

I was a big Jabba fan when I was a kid so I thought the little Hutt was funny.  Not sure about that one on Coruscant though.

I just remembered when I was little I used to wrap tape around some of the Star Wars figures heads and make them into new bounty hunters that hung out at Jabba's Palace or on his Sail Barge LOL.

EDIT - And I used to pretend they were fighting over the mighty Sarlacc Pit which was my bathroom sink.  I'm getting excited.  Need to calm down.

i don't really remember having a lot of Star wars toys for some reason. I remember having a Luke and is racer thing and then a C3PO head carrying case for the toys. that's about it.

I just heard about The People vs. George Lucas documentary www.peoplevsgeorge.com

You interview yourself and vent about what a pile of sh*t/ awesome filmmaking the Star Wars prequels are, I guess, and get put in a movie.

I think a lot of the hate towards the prequel films is unfounded.  Yes, Jar Jar Binks is annoying, but not so much that there needs to be a Phantom Edit.  These films are geared towards kids and the original films had R2D2 and C3PO for comic relief as well.  Both have cringeworthy dialogue and wooden acting in large doses.  The prequels had such high expectations they were impossible to meet.  Yes, I love the Original Trilogy a lot more, but the Prequel Trilogy still contains a lot of great moments.  These films are pure escapism a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

It's nice to finally hear someone else say that!! I've felt that for quite some time. I also think I to III don't deserve as much hatred as they get.

But then again, I was one of maybe 10 that didn't mind Lucas making the Special Editions. :-) I'm not a purist. (Which is one reason I don't mind Abrams tinkering with Star Trek either.)

Yeah, the majority of fans freak out over Lucas changing it to Greedo shooting at Han first.  It was a lot cooler when Han shot first making him more of a gray character.  Some of the changes may be for the worse, but only in minor ways.  The films look spectacular with how cleaned up they are.  People should just relax and enjoy them for what they are.  The biggest beef I had with the  Prequel Trilogy was how LITERALLY everything was computer animation whereas the original movies at least went to real locations around the world.

I'm with you guys. I like the overall prequel trilogy and I think those hating Phantom Menace are like those people who didn't like Fellowship of the Ring. At first, one says it's cheesy and all, but you understand there wouldn't be chapter II and III without it. Plus, I always liked Jar Jar Binks and the underwater city part. The acting has always been that way, kind of wooden, but I don't see it as a flaw. It's evidently a creative intention. To give a feuilleton quality to it all.

Last week's episode of the Clone Wars revolved around Star Wars most maligned character Jar Jar Binks.  I'm glad Lucas is ignoring the majority of fans hatred and continuing to have new Jar Jar material.  Yes, he is goofy, but come on folks, he isn't any worse than the droids comic relief.  This series is visually stunning and recommended to SW aficionados.

I was doing merch for an electro-industrical show last night, and the director of People v George Lucas was there. He has an art show in Denver later this month. We chatted about the intended spirit of the movie, and he says he's still taking video submissions on the website. He's a big SW fan. Oh, and he's hot.

coolsprings - regarding your comment a few posts above about everything being digital - i watched most of "A Bridge Too Far" yesterday and was amazed by the scene where they jump out of the planes and parachute down. Lots of planes and HUNDREDS of REAL PEOPLE jumping out of these airplanes for about 2 minutes worth of footage. The footage itself isn't all that interesting until you realize that today, they would've just digitized the whole thing, and knowing it was 100% real made it special somehow (I know that sounds sappy).

still haven't watched a single episode of the TV Show. Gonna wait for Blu-Ray.
