This is a very good question. I'm not a Mason, but I've always been curious what some higher-up Masons think of the otherworldly stuff in Twin Peaks. I don't know if Lynch is a Mason (though his many years in the Boy Scouts would have been a good preparation for it). But I suspect that those who possess higher degrees in Masonry would find at least some elements of the Lodges to be interesting, not to mention Coop's crystal clear combination of intellect and intuition.

If you start making fun of them, they will come out to play.  My ex was.  He has the symbol tattooed on, so he couldn't very well keep it secret.  I guess joining iis a trendy manly-man thing to do now.

Okay, the ignorant Dane speaks again. What is a Mason?

First I though it was like a Rockefeller, then it sounded like just a name for someone upper class, but then 12rainbow mentions a tattoo. Is it some sort of cult??

OR is it what we in DK call Mensa? -A club for people who has an IQ above a million.

Ditte, it's noting like Mensa. It's called Frimurerlogen in Norwegian, I don't know what you Danes call it.

No, but I learned their secret handshakes from Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Both my Grandfather and Dad have been offered membership, but they both declined. Not sure what my Grandfather's motives were, but my Dad was pretty much an atheist. In Danish a Mason is called a "Frimurer." :) They have a lodge or whatever sort of close to Parken... on Blegdamsvej. Huge stone brick building.

Someone asked what Freemasonry is, so I pasted the wiki introduction below. Freemasons are associated with religion, philosophy, enlightenment, charity, secrecy, politics, rituals, controversy, conspiracy and even Jack the Ripper. They organize their local groups into "Lodges" (there's plenty of them in Washington state), and they welcome people of various religious backgrounds. They believe that intellectual, intuitive and spiritual evolution of the individual is possible and happens, and (before Twin Peaks originally aired) I had read that their higher degree members believe in a White Lodge where "enlightened" beings dwell.

Describing the Masons in detail would add several pages to this forum. I won't bore you with the lengthy list of Freemasons who were America's Founding Fathers & Presidents, but I just realized their square & compass symbol reminds me of the symbol on Teresa Banks' ring. Maybe the "G" inside it stands for Georgia Coffee...

Freemasonry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that arose from obscure origins (theorised to be anywhere from the time of the building of King Solomon's Temple to the mid-1600s). Freemasonry now exists in various forms all over the world, with a membership estimated at around 5 million, with around 480,000 in England, Scotland and Ireland alone, and over 2,000,000 in the United States. The various forms all share moral and metaphysical ideals, which include, in most cases, a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.

The fraternity is administratively organised into Grand Lodges (or sometimes Orients), each of which governs its own jurisdiction, which consists of subordinate (or constituent) Lodges. Grand Lodges recognise each other through a process of landmarks and regularity. There are also appendant bodies, which are organisations related to the main branch of Freemasonry, but with their own independent administration.

Freemasonry uses the metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple, to convey what has been described as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."

I was never a boyscout or never have really joined any group-except I am now a Libertarian. The Lodges concept, especially a White Lodge is intriguing, thanks chainsaw. At this point I am gonna dummy up on my plans - taking a hint from 12Rainbow.

I think it's a totally cool tradition if your family was all into it.  Two generations ago, all the men on the East coast (my family included) just did it, no questions.

I think it is the same in danish - "Frimurerloge". In swedish I think it's "Frimurareorden"...maybe it doesn't help, but...

It's would be cool to have a keyboard with umlot, accent grave , circumflex ( ^) and other accents over the letters-vowels -to write in different languages. Mine just has English keys.

I did a little research on the Freemasons-they include all races, the different religions and are literally all over the world as per chainsaw's post. I'm busy consulting to the real estate/mortgage industry this month and will look into this when I have the time.

Is the Water Buffalo Lodge on The Flintstones allied with the Masons?  Being pre-historical, I doubt they had any concept of "supreme being" (Except maybe Mr. Slate).  And what about Shriners?

Hello, in the name of C.V. de Wortelpin Heijen.

What's going on. The Wortelpin on the world wide web!!!

In the short period of carnaval the prince rules our village Heijen. But that is merely a big dream. In reality it is a fake ruler and it's all just for fun. So do not think these princes really are powerful. They are just glad to be the chosen ones for a couple of days. After carnaval it is all over again and a normal life is all that is left.

Theo,

Raymond, no problem. The site is very good and runs through the history of Freemasonary in Scotland. The HQ of the GL of Scotland is based in Edinburgh and is open to public visits. Very good I think. There are various othe sites for other countries too.

A word of warning though, don't get too hooked into what other people think they know about the subject. That is the reason I sent you the link as all the information anyone who is not already a member would require is there. Hope it helps.

Yes Senna. I suspect there are misconceptions galore. I will do a proper research. ( I think people like Ben Franklin, Duke Ellington and my grandfather were good people. )
